Job Introduction

BBC World Service is looking for an experienced senior journalist to head its Gujarati digital news service.

BBC World Service is an international news provider, part of BBC News, delivering a wide range of language and regional services on digital, TV and radio. It reaches a weekly audience of more than 400 million around the world, helping them make sense of the world we live in.

BBC News Gujarati brings quality, impartial, original journalism to Gujarati-speaking audiences in India and around the world on digital. Its multimedia content, available on www.bbc.com/gujaratii and on social media platforms, reaches on average more than 2.5 million unique users every week.

It is part of six Indian Language services based in the Delhi bureau and providing content for both its audiences and those of other language services.

Main Responsibilities

As News Editor you will provide editorial and managerial leadership for the BBC News Gujarati team in Delhi and in Ahmedabad, ensuring that the service remains the point of reference in international, local and regional news, through the publication of first-rate, creative content relevant to the target audience.

Day to day duties will include:

  • Using editorial judgement, creativity and managerial skills to lead the BBC News Gujarati output and effectively communicate the service\'s strategy to all staff.
  • Building team spirit within new or existing teams; ensuring the best use of individual skills; encouraging team members to think about potential improvements.
  • In consultation with the Lead Editor (Output) and the senior leadership team, the News Editor will implement the overall strategy for BBC News Gujarati in line with the objectives of the World Service.
  • Maximise best editorial practice and collaboration between Content and Output areas within International Services and the wider News Division.
  • Sets team and individual objectives, as well as clear expectations about required performance levels, rewards success and addresses performance issues promptly and fairly, treats team members with respect.
  • Liaise closely and constructively with other departments in BBC News, particularly News Online, Newsroom, News Content, and other News and current affairs output areas.
  • Provide advice to other BBC departments on Gujarati and its politics and current affairs. This may involve participation in the output of other BBC departments.
  • Editorially responsible for all the content published on the website and on social media platforms, and to explore more opportunities of interacting with audiences.
Are you the right candidate?

To be successful in this role candidates must demonstrate:
  • Fluency in both written and spoken Gujarati as first language or equivalent and excellent English and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Gujarati news and current affairs and the ability to lead the production of impactful original digital content as well as the coverage of major breaking news.
  • Ability to translate organisation and department goals into action plans and lead the team to deliver on those goals.
  • In-depth knowledge of data analytics and experience of using it to shape the content and meet the needs of different audience groups.
  • Track record of commissioning, producing and delivering high-quality impactful content
  • Able to demonstrate an innovative and creative way of looking at stories and how to bring them to life; able to harness team\'s creativity
  • Proven experience of staff management, motivation and appropriate deployment of staff with a variety of backgrounds to work in new ways in a rapidly changing multi-skilled environment.
  • Demonstrates energy and enthusiasm for developments in digital platforms, especially in social media, in Gujarat and the wider target area.
  • An extended network of contacts from community leaders to government officials, political figures and civil society organisations would be desirable.
