Job Description

A welder fuses metal parts together using heat and pressure to build or repair structures, equipment, and products. A welder's job description includes reading blueprints, preparing metal materials, setting up and operating welding equipment, and performing quality control checks on the welds. They must also follow strict safety protocols and maintain their tools and machinery.
Core responsibilities
Interpret blueprints:
Read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and blueprints to understand project requirements and plan welding procedures.
Prepare materials:
Clean, cut, align, and prepare metal pieces for welding by removing grease, moisture, or other impurities.
Weld metal:
Use various welding techniques (such as MIG, TIG, or arc welding) to join metal parts, fill seams, or repair components.
Operate equipment:
Set up, use, and maintain specialized welding equipment, torches, and other hand tools.
Inspect work:
Assess the quality of completed welds, checking for flaws, proper dimensions, and adherence to specifications and safety standards.
Ensure safety:
Follow strict safety regulations, use protective equipment, and ensure a safe work environment.
Additional duties

• Build up worn or defective surfaces.

• Dismantle assemblies or cut material to size and shape using burning equipment.

• Perform final finishing on welded products, such as polishing surfaces.

• Work collaboratively with engineers, other crews, and team members to troubleshoot problems.

• Maintain a clean and organized work area and equipment.
