EMEA Markets Legal Team -VP - Based in Mumbai

You will act as a local Team Lead and escalation point, for the EMEA Markets Leal Team at Mumbai.

The team provides legal support on wide range of financial products (e.g. Bilateral Derivatives, Exchange Traded Derivatives, Cleared Swaps, Repo and Stock Lending) including negotiation of ISDA Master, Futures & Options and Cleared OTC Derivatives agreements, GMRA and GMSLA agreements.

This is an exciting and dynamic role that will enable you to develop skills and knowledge as a financial services lawyer through working on a variety of products within the wider Markets Practice Group. By joining the team, you will have the opportunity to play a critical role in the success of several market leading businesses, where the role of the in-house lawyer is vital to the success of the business.

You will be responsible for ensuring appropriate legal agreements are negotiated and put in place with new and existing clients being onboarded onto the Markets platform. This position involves frequent interaction with internal teams across the Corporate & Investment Bank including Sales, Credit Risk, Client Service, Business Management and Operations, as well as Dealers and external Clients.

Other responsibilities include; coordinating Credit approvals, initiating Client documentation process with different production areas of the firm, commission and reviewing of various legal opinions and resolving issues raised by Clients and the relevant Markets Businesses that relate to legal agreements and Markets product suites.

Location and Reporting Line

The position is based in Mumbai, at J.P. Morgan\'s Corporate Centre, functionally reporting to an experienced lawyer in EMEA Markets Legal team based in London and locally to Head Legal of the CIB Legal Teams in Mumbai.

Responsibilities

The position is part of the EMEA Markets Legal team, which is an integral part of the Markets Legal Practice Group for JP Morgan:

The role will include the following responsibilities:

• Provides leadership and acts as escalation point for the EMEA Markets Legal Team legal team at Mumbai.
• Builds and manages relationship stakeholders in the legal department as well as business team in EMEA.
• Drafting and finalizing Markets specific agreements with Dealers and Clients (including various master agreements and electronic trading documentation).
• Coordinating senior internal approvals
• Interpreting, explaining and negotiating legal agreements to Clients and Executing Brokers.
• Strategize with relevant Markets Businesses on best way to manage changes to product development, risk or operational processes.
• Assisting and advising on regulatory change and implementation affecting the relevant Markets Business.
• Driving process, documentation, and efficiency improvements across the team\'s areas of coverage.

Skills and experience

• Qualified as a lawyer in India or other common law jurisdiction with at least 10 and up to 12 years of post-qualification legal experience (either as in-house counsel in the financial services industry or as a lawyer in a law firm);
• Has successful track record of coaching, mentoring team members and leadership skills including attracting, developing, and retaining talent.
• Mature personality with skills and ability to work independently under pressure.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, together with the ability to communicate and articulate legal issues effectively with colleagues at all levels and across different jurisdictions;
• Ability to work collaboratively and build close rapport with internal stakeholders across Sales, Product, Client Service, Operation, Risk and Compliance functions across jurisdictions;
• Ability to timely and appropriately identify risks and escalate issues to relevant stakeholders;
• Ability to adapt and apply legal skills in new contexts, to new businesses and subjects in which one may not have prior relevant experience, and willingness to develop and excel beyond his/ her comfort zone; and
• Ability to manage and control legal risks in a constructive manner.
• Previous derivative documentation experience - Fixed Income Financing, Futures and Options experience or Over The Counter derivatives preferred but not essential
• Motivation and determination to learn
• Strong attention to detail and interpersonal experience
• Relevant knowledge of derivatives and applicable regulations preferred but not essential
• Ability to manage projects and work independently
• Team player, confident, and proactive
