The Role


The intent of the Technical Operations Manager \xe2\x80\x93 Economics & Scheduling Capability role is to develop highly specialized E&S capability to meet the Chemicals and Products(C+P) Business ambitions while managing the growing Optimization and Scheduling teams supporting C+P. This role will interact with the Business Management E&S, ROM, and Supply team and the Transformation and Business Improvement (TBI) teams as key stakeholders. This role will start as an \xe2\x80\x9cas-is" E&S implementation role, but will shift to a development role as the strategy is developed and the supporting organization grows. Purpose & Accountabilities
  • Directly supervise team of 8-12 staff SME\xe2\x80\x99s at JG3/4 and (through team leaders) up to 50 staff at JG5/6 as the capability building pipeline grows
  • Collaborate with Business Management team and TBI on emerging opportunities and staffing options
  • Work with recruiting and HR to develop and advance a funnel of candidates
  • Create a role progression plan including opportunities to advance into and out of roles in the TAO Economics & Scheduling team
  • Create an on-boarding and development plan including use of SME direct reports along with experts in the business. Longer term, ensure the reporting team can support development of new staff vs development by onshore teams
  • Collaborate with the TBI and Business teams to understand and help co-create the Blue Sky Vision for the Optimization and Scheduling space and translate into suggestions on how to leverage the TAO team to deliver including development of new capabilities
  • Work with the Operations Lead and the Deployment Leads in managing applicable migration (especially the new and complex ones) and to apply a strategic lens to set up the teams for long-term success
Dimensions
  • No Annual budgets which you directly control but can have influence over department and production area budgets.
  • Direct line management responsibility of 8-12 direct staff at JG3/4, and (through team leaders) up to 50 staff at JG5/6 as capability building pipeline grows. The candidate is expected to coach/mentor less experienced staff in the large ESBO organization.
Skills & Requirements
  • Bachelors or equivalent in a technical discipline; Masters or higher qualification would be an added advantage
  • Current (or recent) experience in the Refining and/or Chemical CoB with 6+ years in E&S optimization experience. Overall experience expected 15+ years.
  • 4+ years supervisory experiencing managing a team of professionals
  • Collaborative attitude towards stakeholders, colleagues, and team members with a proven track-record to actively bring others along on a journey
  • External orientation and curiosity as to what is happening in the market and in other parts of Shell to bring these perspectives into team development
  • Experienced / qualified in continuous improvement, to drive improvements in business and ways of working
  • Tech / digital savvy and comfortable working with new technology platforms, (advanced) models and complex data systems. Experience working with Linear Program models is a plus.
  • Learner mindset, natural curiosity, and passion for continuous improvement.
  • Ability to engage and effectively communicate at all levels inside and outside Shell and within different cultural settings.
