Understand and interpret requirements from the film concept
Study the script to understand required mood and overall theme
Consider camera angles and lighting to be used in the storyboard presentation
Compose wireframe drawings from which the more detailed illustrations will be developed
Complete color or monochrome storyboards in full for use by production staff
Edit storyboards and make changes as per the request of the director or production team
The work is used as reference points by key departments on a production. So, clear visual interpretation is required as the storyboard is when the story first begins to come to life.
Must convey the spirit of the story through gesture, emotion, movement, and logical progression of action.
Sequencing the scenes from a script into storyboard format using panels of images
Including special effects in the storyboard frames
Identifying lighting requirements and articulating circles of tension within each scene
Including key dialogue or scene directions within each frame
Briefing animators on key scenes within the storyboard Amending storyboard scenes during the course of production
Qualifications
An academic background in Art and Design can be beneficial.
Convey themes, concept and “blocking” (practical pre-planning of producible scenes) in an easy-to-understand way.
Skills
An ability to understand complex or ambiguous production instructions given to the artist in the initial meeting
A creative mind which can conjure new perspectives
A sympathetic approach to the time constraints of media production
Strong artistic ability, and knowledge of how to present visuals in a convincing way
Willingness to consider and learn different/new artistic styles outside the “comfort zone”
Strong understanding of computer design software suites, where appropriate
Understanding of the principles of animation
Knowledge of the principles of storytelling
Ability to interpret the ideas of others into detailed drawings
Analytical skills
Strong layout and design skills
Ability to work quickly and react to last-minute changes
Adaptability in working with different directors who will demand varying degrees of complexity from storyboards
Skills in computer drawing
Solid knowledge of camera angles and cinematography techniques
Editing skills
