Stewards are generally also responsible for greeting guests as they enter the area. They may offer menu cards and extend a greeting. Stewards may also provide seats to the guests, offer them water or a welcome drink and deliver drinks and food prepared by the bartender and chef
Answering the phone and providing basic information about restaurant services and operating hours or assisting with the scheduling of reservations
Maintaining clean and sanitised menus for guest use
Refilling drinks as required
Rolling and replacing cutlery as required
Maintaining stocked serving stations with condiments, trays and napkins
Directing customers to the location of the restrooms
Clearing tables as guests finish their meals
Complying with all safety and sanitation procedures
Assisting kitchen staff with the preparation of simple dishes such as salads and desserts
Ensuring everything is in place before leaving the restaurant*
During work hours, stewards regularly interact with various individuals. For instance, they directly communicate with guests to learn their requirements and wants. They may also communicate with other employees regarding any issue or with the upper management on other matters pertaining to the organisation or their position.
It is necessary for stewards to organise and remember each task so that they can fulfil them properly and quickly. They may also develop systems that improve the efficiency of their own and others' work. Excellent organisational skills enable stewards to perform their duties effectively, ensuring that they perform all duties and follow all the procedures with less errors.
