Job Description

A Mechanical Shift Incharge in a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) is responsible for supervising mechanical maintenance and operations during an assigned shift to ensure smooth production and adherence to safety and quality standards. Key responsibilities include leading the mechanical team, executing preventive and breakdown maintenance on machinery like cranes and furnaces, troubleshooting equipment issues, planning shift activities, and maintaining records.
Key responsibilities

• Team management: Supervise and guide the mechanical team, manage manpower, and ensure they follow safety protocols.
• Maintenance execution: Plan and perform routine, preventive, and breakdown maintenance on various machinery and equipment, such as rolling mills, furnaces, cranes, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.
• Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve mechanical issues and equipment breakdowns quickly to minimize downtime.
• Shift planning: Coordinate daily activities, plan maintenance based on production schedules, and ensure all necessary materials and spares are available.
• Quality and safety: Ensure all work is done safely and in compliance with safety protocols. Monitor quality standards and implement corrective actions for any issues.
• Record keeping: Maintain accurate logs, maintenance reports, and records for all shift activities.

Required skills and qualifications

• Strong understanding of mechanical systems, including hydraulics and pneumatics.
• Experience with preventive and breakdown maintenance.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting equipment issues.
• Ability to manage and motivate a team.
• Familiarity with safety and quality standards in an industrial environment.
• Often requires a diploma in a relevant engineering field (e.g., Mechanical, ITI).
