Job Description

A Shift Engineer - Electrical Maintenance is responsible for ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of electrical systems and equipment across rotating shifts. This role is vital in maintaining uninterrupted operations in facilities such as manufacturing plants, data centers, hospitals, or industrial workshops. The engineer leads and supports maintenance teams, implements preventive strategies, and responds swiftly to emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
Plan & Execute Maintenance
Perform both reactive and planned preventive maintenance on electrical systems--lighting, power distribution, UPS, control panels, emergency systems.
Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules, estimates, and resource plans.
Troubleshooting & Repair
Diagnose and repair electrical faults promptly to minimize downtime.
Guide technicians in motor repairs, control circuitry, PLC systems, and more.
Safety & Compliance
Follow health & safety protocols, permit-to-work systems, and isolation procedures.
Ensure work is performed in line with regulatory, contract, and client standards, including QHSE requirements in healthcare or facility environments.
Documentation & Reporting
Complete and maintain detailed records, job reports, risk assessments, method statements, and compliance logs via CAFM or similar systems.
Team Coordination
Supervise technicians, manage shift handovers, and support cross-functional teams or contractors as needed.
Implement efficiency improvements, monitor KPIs (e.g., downtime, OEE), and report to senior management.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Maintenance, or a related field.
Equivalent credentials such as City & Guilds or NVQ Level 2/3 (Electrical Installation/Maintenance) are acceptable.
Technical Skills
Familiarity with electrical systems: motors, drives, generators, PLCs, control panels, UPS, emergency lighting.
Knowledge of relevant standards and regulations (e.g., IEE 17th/18th Edition, HTM/HBM guidelines in healthcare).
Experience
Prior experience in maintenance, particularly in rotating shifts, in industrial or critical environments.
Exposure to building systems, electromechanical services, or industrial automation adds value.
Soft Skills
Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving abilities, and calmness under pressure.
Effective communication, both with teams and clients, including during emergencies.
Attention to detail, safety awareness, organizational capabilities, and basic digital literacy (e.g., MS Office, CMMS).
Shift & Work Environment
Shift Pattern
Rotating shifts such as 4 on/4 off or 12-hour day/night schedules are common.
Environment
Work is typically in manufacturing plants, hospitals, data centers, or facility estates where electrical integrity is critical.
Physical demands may include working at heights, carrying tools, and emergency response readiness.

Environments demand strict adherence to safety protocols and accurate maintenance logs to ensure operational integrity and minimize incidents.
