We are looking for skilled and passionate senior software developers to help us build the best products that enable the research community to advance the progress and understanding of science. In this role, you will be helping to build the systems that support editors, publishers, and integrity specialists ensure the quality and integrity of the research we publish.
We work closely with our research integrity, production, and editorial teams in several locations and have an ambitious mission critical to the company's continued growth and reputation. It's a high-profile programme of work and requires proactive, skilled collaboration in both business and technical areas.
You will be joining a mature multi-programme product development department that prioritise continuous improvement and shared learning. We value engineering excellence, and believe quality is what helps us go fast. You will work on a system which has dozens of impactful deployments to production every working day.
Your cross functional team, made up of different nationalities, backgrounds and experience levels, will actively collaborate across roles to deliver solutions to meet the evolving demands of the research integrity domain.
About Role :
We're looking for a proactive senior software developer with several years of experience who can help us build the best publication experience in the world.
The job is based in our Pune location and you will be working with a team based in Pune, London, and Lisbon. We offer a mixed remote/office working with up to three days per week working from home. You'll be part of our bigger community of developers located in the UK, India, Germany and Portugal.

About You
You are keen to understand the problems we're solving, curious, and not afraid to ask questions
You have several years of experience developing software in Kotlin or Java and have a good understanding of how to build web applications, end to end.
You enjoy mentoring less experienced developers.
You like working in a collaborative team, where there is collective ownership of the product.
You enjoy getting involved with every stage of the software development lifecycle.
You would enjoy working in a Test-Driven environment and understand the benefits.
You would enjoy pair programming and working in a trunk-based development environment; practising Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery.
You see the value in developers owning production software and view failure as a chance to learn.
You can identify and discuss trade-offs of different technical approaches to a solution
You have experience in providing insights into the technical implications or solutions to consider and making it easy for less experienced or less technical colleagues to understand
You embrace a learning culture and strive to incorporate best practices and improvements into your daily work

What you will be doing
Within 3 Months you will:
Get familiar with our technology stack. All our new applications are built in Kotlin using http4k. Our applications are deployed to CloudFoundry using Concourse.
Take part in developing new features as a member of the tech team.
Get familiar with, and take part in, the team's agile processes and ceremonies.
Coach junior members of the team.
Triage support queries and diagnose issues in the live applications.
By 3-6 months you will:
Be a supportive member of the tech team, understanding our end-to-end, developing our infrastructure, including non-functional requirements, and working closely with our technology and Production partners.
Have an understanding of the team's context within the publishing business they are working in.
Lead technical discussions with the team in order to improve the product architecture and code quality.
Be able to understand and discuss business requirements with stakeholders and Product Owners.
Contribute to blameless post-mortems.
Take part in the recruiting process, helping to assess applicants across SN Digital.
By 6-12 months you will:
Onboard new members to the team or help other teams on the onboarding process.
Transform high level requirements into actionable work.
Proactively provide useful and actionable feedback to team members.
Become an advocate for defining and implementing non-functional requirements.
Influence the design of the system architecture.
Be able to explain and visualise the benefits and trade-offs of proposed solutions.
Understand our customers' needs, both internal and external, and how your work affects their experience.
Day to day responsibilities
As part of an Agile product team, day-to-day you will:
Take part in our daily stand-ups.
Contribute to ceremonies like planning, story writing, collaborative design and retrospectives.
Develop new features and improve code quality by pair programming with other team members, as well as working independently.
Take part in support and monitoring of our websites.
