Job Description

A security guard's job description includes patrolling premises, monitoring surveillance equipment, and controlling access points to protect people and property from theft, violence, or other illegal activity. They are responsible for responding to alarms and emergencies, investigating disturbances, and writing incident reports. Key duties involve enforcing rules, providing assistance to visitors, and coordinating with law enforcement when necessary.
Core responsibilities

• Patrolling and surveillance: Conduct regular patrols on foot or in a vehicle to monitor premises, detect security breaches, and look for hazards. Monitor CCTV cameras and alarm systems for unusual or suspicious activity.
• Access control: Monitor and authorize the entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and vehicles. Check identification, issue access badges, and secure all exits, doors, and windows.
• Emergency response: Act as the first responder to alarms, emergencies, and security breaches. Assess situations, call for backup from law enforcement or medical services, and provide assistance to those in need.
• Reporting and documentation: Maintain logs of daily activities, visitor information, and incidents. Prepare detailed and accurate incident reports to document observations, occurrences, and any irregularities.
• Enforcement and intervention: Enforce company policies, procedures, and rules. Intervene in conflicts or disturbances, using de-escalation techniques when possible. Apprehend trespassers or individuals involved in illegal activity, if necessary and appropriate according to legal protocol.

Essential skills and qualifications

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong observational and problem-solving skills.
• The ability to remain calm and professional during emergencies.
• High school diploma or GED is often the minimum requirement, with experience sometimes preferred.
• May require a valid security license or certification depending on local regulations.
• Good physical fitness is often necessary, as the job can involve standing for long periods or walking extensively.
