Job Description

A mechanical pump operator for a Steel Melting Shop (SMS) is responsible for operating and maintaining pumps that provide continuous water circulation for cooling systems, such as the furnace and continuous casting machine. Key duties include monitoring pump performance (pressure, flow, temperature), performing routine checks on lubrication and seals, assisting with repairs, logging operational data, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The role requires mechanical knowledge, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to coordinate with other teams for maintenance and repair work.
Key responsibilities
Pump operation:
Start, stop, and monitor pumps to ensure proper functioning and maintain desired flow rates and pressure.
Performance monitoring:
Observe and record readings from gauges and flow meters to ensure equipment operates within specified parameters.
Maintenance and checks:
Conduct regular inspections, check and maintain lubrication levels, and check for leaks, vibrations, or unusual noises.
Troubleshooting and repairs:
Identify and assist in resolving mechanical issues with pumps, valves, and pipelines. This includes performing minor repairs and helping with more extensive maintenance tasks.
Record keeping:
Maintain accurate logs of pump operation, performance data, maintenance activities, and any abnormalities.
Safety and compliance:
Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
Coordination:
Communicate and coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and other relevant teams to schedule and execute maintenance and repair work.
Required skills and qualifications
Experience:
Previous experience in a steel plant or industrial setting, specifically with pump operations, is often required.
Mechanical aptitude:
A strong understanding of pumps and related mechanical equipment, including how they work, their maintenance needs, and how to troubleshoot them.
Technical skills:
Ability to read gauges, meters, and technical diagrams; familiarity with maintenance tools and hand tools.
Problem-solving:
Ability to identify and troubleshoot mechanical malfunctions in a timely manner.
Communication:
Ability to clearly communicate with team members, supervisors, and other departments.
