Job Description


Background & Context The role is for a design assistant/ draftsperson par excellence for Aparna Rao, an artist based in Bangalore, India with an international practice that spans art, design, technology and craft. She is the co-founder of Pors & Rao Studio, the Robotics Aesthetics & Usability Center at ETH in Zurich and Phantom Hands, a craft based hand made furniture company in Bangalore. She collaborates with a number of world leading artists, scientists and designers, also for a variety of output spanning exhibitions, furniture, experimental objects, spaces and installations in a variety of scales, such as handheld delicate paper/ carbon, 3d printed models to the size of small buildings. The focus is on extremely accurate dimensioning and design geometry; and ability to generate options based on understanding the precise relationship between fundamental form elements. This also requires a very keen eye and ability to triangulate measurements and their translation into modular formats. An ability to hand sketch precise dimensions on the fly and high proficiency in Fusion 360 is a must. Skills Required

  • Keen listening/ understanding of intention and ability to translate quick hand sketches into accurate 3D models in Fusion 360.
  • Very strong observation, visual sense of proportion, dimensions and ability to quickly evaluate real objects/ fabrications against virtual drawings.
  • Strong understanding of material and processes is good to have.
  • Prior knowledge of generating fabrication drawings from CAD models based on process, is a good to have.
  • Strong hands on building skills is a strong plus point.
  • Being a strong, independent self learner, using on-line resources and seeking pointed support/ assistance when needed.
  • Educational background in Architecture, Engineering or Product Design.
