Depending on role and business needs, colleagues will either work onsite, in a hybrid model (combination of in-office and virtual days) or fully virtually. A collaborative partnership between a centralized Operational Risk Governance Group (ORGG), subject matter experts (SMEs), business unit partners, and the Operational Excellence team enables efficient and effective operational risk controls supported by the company’s Operational Risk Framework. This framework consists of several core components including risk assessment, business and environmental internal control factors, and reporting and monitoring. The Manager, Finance Operational Excellence reports to the Director, Finance Operational Excellence, whose main responsibilities are to support the company's operational risk framework across the Finance organization and provide Operational Risk expertise. Under the guidance of the Director, Finance Operational Excellence, the activities for this role will include:

  • Building an understanding of the inherent Risk & Control Framework for the Finance processes, identifying risk, and apprising management, while ensuring process activity is efficient, effective, and aligned with the risk tolerance of American Express and the business unit
  • Ensuring effective governance by monitoring the quarterly process certification and control testing activities
  • Leading process risk assessment and end to end process management for Finance processes, which covers both documenting new processes and overseeing refreshes of the existing processes
  • Ensuring the Risk Assessment Questionnaire (RAQ) is executed in accordance with ORGG guidelines and strengthening operational risk compliance, governance, and control for the 10 operational risk pillars
  • Engaging in risk assessments using the company’s standard methodologies; mitigating identified risk and control weaknesses through the creation of appropriate action plans.
  • Possessing good knowledge of the Process Risk Self-Assessment (PRSA) guidelines and serving as a subject matter expert in the operational risk framework
  • Supporting the effectiveness of Finance risk management programs through strong engagement and relationship building with business partners
  • Challenging the status quo and providing recommendations to the business partners on the current control framework
  • 4-7 years of experience in Operational Risk Management, Audit, Compliance, Project Management, and/or Business/Operations/Finance functions.
  • A graduate degree in any field is required. However, an MBA or equivalent will be preferred.
  • A strong understanding and practical experience in Risk and Control disciplines, including COSO framework, audit approach, Sarbanes Oxley, and/or processes risk assessment is preferred.
  • Ability to clearly communicate operational risk requirements and work proactively with and influence business partners to meet all deadlines as required
  • Good analytical capabilities and willingness to challenge the status quo
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to convey clear insight and thought leadership
  • Good presentation skills, particularly in the development of insightful messaging across levels of management
  • Ability to build good relationships to influence desired outcomes
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, particularly in reporting and data presentation
