About Our Team:
The Content team within Elsevier\xe2\x80\x99s legal department works on the legal dimensions of business and strategic issues relating to Journals, Books, and other content products and services. We collaborate with publishing teams to provide transactional support for a wide variety of contract negotiations, tools and templates for submission systems, and advise on publishing ethics and other legal and policy issues (such as Open Access and author rights questions)

About The Role
Provides legal advice in relation to publishing ethics issues, with a focus on risk management, dispute resolution, development of policies and best practices, development and delivery of training for internal colleagues.
Responsibilities:


  • Providing Publishing Ethics team with legal advice in assessing ethics-related allegations, including plagiarism, duplication, authorship disputes, peer review manipulation, and figure manipulation

  • Providing Publishing Ethics team and publishers with legal advice in relation to potential corrections, editor notes, expressions or concern and retraction notices, as well as disputes and litigation with authors, editors, third party publishers, and other stakeholders

  • Advising on journal society, author and editor contracts

  • Reviewing submitted content prior to publication in order to assess legal risk

  • Liaison with communications team, as appropriate

  • Advising on cases involving multiple journals, and networks of stakeholders

  • Communicating precisely and diplomatically with all stakeholders

  • Working with Publishing Ethics team to raise awareness and knowledge of ethical policies and procedures

  • Working with Publishing Ethics team to provide education to internal colleagues and to the scientific community

  • Suggesting and implementing additions or updates to ethical policies in response to new issues arising

  • Working with Legal colleagues on templates for journal author, editor and society contracts to ensure that these are up to date


Requirement

  • Full legal qualification

  • Two-three years\xe2\x80\x99 prior legal experience in a law firm or in-house, ideally including litigation and intellectual property experience

  • Ideally prior knowledge of academic publishing processes and/or industry best practices and guidelines

  • Strong sense of mature judgement

  • Ability to work independently (or with minimal guidance) and methodically, problem-solving

  • Ability to communicate and resolve complex legal and commercial issues clearly, calmly, and concisely in a way that is readily understandable and can be acted upon by the business.

  • Strong analytical, organizational and prioritization skills
