We're opening a new neighbourhood cafe and need a versatile, reliable Chef who can run a small kitchen end-to-end: menu execution, recipe development, quality control, kitchen organisation and staff training. This is a hands-on role -- you'll cook, plate, prep, order ingredients, and help shape the food identity of the cafe.
Key responsibilities
Prepare and plate all cafe menu items consistently to the cafe standards (breakfast items, sandwiches/wraps, small plates, pastries, simple hot food).
Execute daily mise en place, prep lists and cook to order during service.
Maintain recipe cards and standardised portions; ensure consistent taste, portioning and presentation.
Develop and refine menu items (seasonal specials, cost-effective variations, daily specials) aligned with the cafe brand.
Manage inventory: check deliveries, rotate stock, minimise waste and shrinkage.
Work with the Manager to order supplies, source local/seasonal ingredients and manage food cost targets.
Maintain high standards of kitchen hygiene, food safety and equipment cleanliness; ensure compliance with local food safety regulations.
Train and supervise kitchen staff (prep cook, dishwasher), create rosters and cover shifts when necessary.
Assist with menu costing, pricing suggestions and weekly food-cost reports.
Support opening/closing procedures and participate in continuous improvement (SOPs, prep efficiencies).
Handle customer queries about food when requested and adjust dishes for dietary requirements (allergies, vegan/vegetarian requests) where possible.
