Job Description

A Fitter Mechanical SMS (Steel Melting Shop) job involves assembling, installing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical equipment within a steel melting shop. Key responsibilities include reading blueprints, fabricating and fitting components for machinery like furnaces and cranes, conducting diagnostic tests, and performing preventative maintenance and repairs to ensure operational efficiency and safety.
Key responsibilities

• Assembly and installation: Fit and assemble mechanical components for machinery such as furnaces, cranes, and continuous casting machines (CCMs).
• Maintenance and repair: Perform both preventative maintenance and breakdown repairs on mechanical systems and equipment.
• Diagnostics: Conduct diagnostic tests on malfunctioning systems to identify and fix the root cause of the problem.
• Fabrication: Construct structural components from raw materials using tools like shears, power saws, and welding equipment.
• Blueprint interpretation: Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to understand component specifications.
• Inspection: Inspect fabricated and repaired components to ensure they meet quality and size specifications.
• Safety compliance: Adhere to all work-site safety rules and regulations.

Required skills and knowledge

• Mechanical aptitude: A strong understanding of mechanical systems and how they work.
• Tool proficiency: Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools, as well as measuring instruments.
• Technical skills: Skills in fitting, alignment accuracy, welding, and pipework.
• Reading technical drawings: Ability to read and understand mechanical blueprints and specifications.
• Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose and solve mechanical problems.
• Safety awareness: Knowledge of workshop safety and regulations is essential.
