About this role

The purpose of this role is to provide technology expertise to drive the delivery of outcomes as well as coach and lead of a team of Software Engineers. The role is focused on best practices, technology, and delivering business value through high quality software. Delivering software solutions that meet customer requirements, including necessary designs, documentation, automated testing, deployment and in-life support. Driving business performance, efficiency and continuous improvement within the team

Integration streaming platform enables communication between multiple Enterprise application systems via a publish once/subscribe multiple event streams. The purpose of this role is to manage the pan-BT central event platform (using on Confluent Kafka/Streamsets/Ab Initio..) proliferate BT's event driven architecture, deliver standards refinement, enforcement, operational strategy, data flow pattern governance, ensure platform stability and support across various teams operating in the federated model. The job drives technology excellence and innovation in ways of working. The job really understands the needs of various systems requiring central event communication, designs solution if needed or supports onboarding onto the central event platform, ensuring standards and optimal performance. This role is responsible for maintaining the standards across all technical, solution and process aspects, spanning systems, technologies and squads.

You'll have the following responsibilities

• Oversees and guides the design and operation of system, software, infrastructure, ensuring continuous team focus on quality and customer needs.

• Champions the central Event streaming platform with roadmap of systems onboarding/hosting

• Supports multi cloud services on Public/Private/Hybrid Cloud deployments

• Resolves technical issues raised by the team and/or customer and manages escalations as required.

• Delivering software solutions that provide business value and meet customer requirements, including necessary designs, documentation, automated testing, deployment and in-life support.

• Creates migration strategies; defining delivery architecture, designing the orchestration plans and more

• Assist in refining operational support processes, migration guide books and more

• Developing the lifecycle approach selection and limited tailoring, i.e. within a broader programme, or unit approach and practices. Delivering the appropriate level of production and in-life release support to ensure production issues are resolved in a timely and effective manner.

• Driving reuse of technology to ensure efficiency and improve velocity.

• Use troubleshooting skills and work closely with operations, support, and or other functions to ensure successful platform onboarding and operation

• Evaluates platform requirements for new design patterns, tools, technologies and works with architects and design experts in team to arrive at best architectural solution

• Delivering organisational health outcomes across the team, including coaching and team development.

• Providing a technical direction and impacts of technical and commercial decisions on wider software lifecycle.

• Understand need of multiple projects and communicate them divisionally and/or cross-divisionally

• As required, deep dive on technical areas and get the best outcome out of technically challenging situations.

• Mentor technical teams

• The accountable representative of IT to all senior/exec level stakeholders.

• Drive strong engineering practices in the team

• Managing key stakeholders to enable successful software design and delivery.

• Delivering the appropriate level of production and in-life release support to ensure production issues are resolved in a timely and effective manner.

• Technical Expert: Serving as an externally recognised expert in their field and influencing industry forums, external boards and/or conferences through technical expertise. Proactively contributes to the product evolution by bringing an understanding of what new product/services can be enabled by emerging technology capabilities.

• Problem Solving: The ability to identify, investigate and resolve problems through gathering the necessary information, formulating and verifying hypothesis, determining the root cause(s) and selecting and implementing the appropriate solution.

• Issue management: Conduct a deep review of data and issues to quickly reveal the root cause. You recommend short and long-term solutions to complex problems and follow through to make sure we solve them.

• Stakeholder Management: Develop close relationships with customers, vendors, suppliers and BT employees at a senior level, confidently present information and facilitate negotiates. Managing key stakeholders to enable successful software design and delivery.

• Software Development Concepts: Understands and experienced with the use of a wide range of programming concepts and is also aware of and has applied a range of algorithms.

• Business acumen: Knowledgeable in business strategy and the drivers of organisational performance, including people drivers of performance and financial literacy (e.g. business KPIs, business cases)

• Commercial & Risk Awareness: Able to understand & evaluate both obvious and subtle commercial risks, especially in relation to a programme. Able to determine the appropriate commercial solutions and responses in highly political and complex situations and ensure that appropriate action is taken.

• Story-telling with data: strong skills in building the case for change, drawing on data and analytical techniques where appropriate, and communicating this to business audiences

• Background in administration for Messaging Platforms, Managed File Brokers, Data management

• Understanding of Data Architecture, Data Governance, Kafka, No SQL DBSs, scala/spark

• Self-learner & keep yourself abreast of the business, technology & IT practice changes

• Interest in running POCs for new technologies, analysing considerations, establishing standards and propagating to wider teams

Say MANDATORY or PREFERRED for each experience.

• Mandatory hands on experience with Confluent Kafka for at least 2 years, Event Streaming Platforms, Transformational Batch Processing

• Experience with setting up and troubleshooting Kafka replicators, Brokers, Zookepers, Kafka Connectors

• Experience with cloud platforms like AWS/GCP/SaaS products like Confluent cloud

• Overall experience of 8-15 years in the data space

• Prior experience building new platforms/ leading system technology transformations

• Hands on experience building highly available, cloud scalable, real time and high-performance data solutions leveraging private/public cloud & Streaming technologies

• In-life experience supporting business critical applications with high SLAs
