The Macroeconomics, Trade and Investment Global Practice

The Macroeconomics, Trade and Investment (MTI) Global Practice leads the World Bank Group's dialogue and engagement with clients in macroeconomics, fiscal policy, trade, competition and investment. MTI India

The MTI Team in India is responsible for macroeconomic analysis, economic and fiscal policy dialogue, technical advice, and capacity-building support in macro-economic and fiscal management, budget-related reforms, trade, and climate change. In addition to its regular economic monitoring mandate, the team manages a rich program! This program consists of policy and results-based financing operations and significant, complex programmatic analytic work, which includes the delivery of analytical and advisory as well as technical assistance. All of the tasks are cross-sectoral and integral to our country program's policy dialogue.

The position requires a motivated and seasoned economist with strong analytical and interpersonal skills, significant experience in operational and/or analytic work drawing on diverse teams! The selected candidate is expected to contribute substantially and/or lead analytical and operational work. They will report to the MTI Practice Manager covering South Asia.

Job duties and responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to the work of the Bank in India on macroeconomic, trade and climate change issues;
  • Provide support and/or lead research on economic issues relevant to the MTI program;
  • Lead data processing tasks and maintain databases;
  • Participate and/or lead and/or, as needed, in a broad range of lending and non-lending tasks and take a pro-active role in promoting the latest lending and advisory services and analytics;
  • Provide the day-to-day technical support to the MTI India Delhi-based team (policy briefs, PPTs, and quick on-demand analysis), working closely with and in consultation with the Practice Manager;
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with key government counterparts as well as internal and external stakeholders including, NGOs, civil society, universities/think tanks and international organizations;
  • Play a central role in MTI business development efforts in India;
  • Ensure the integration of key MTI thematic areas (inclusive growth, fiscal management, macro-economic modelling) in the country work program and promote multi-sector approaches;
  • Engage with the broader country team, other GPs and CCSAs to enhance the rigor of advice on cross- cutting and sectoral issues in support of the inclusive growth agenda;
  • Facilitate interaction and exchange of expertise and knowledge with the broader MTI GP.
Selection Criteria
  • Master's or Ph.D. (preferred) degree in economics, with at least five years of experience in applied research and policy analysis (in economic or public policy acquired in an international organization, national administration, university or research institution);
  • Proven sense of initiative, results orientation, and leadership qualities, as well as effective teamwork skills;
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to speak persuasively and to present ideas clearly and concisely with senior policy officials;
  • Strong integrative capacities; i.e., ability to situate MTI activities within a coherent strategic framework;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in conducting policy dialogue on economic issues with senior government officials, the private sector, donor representatives and civil society;
  • Superior analytical skills demonstrated in published work related to macroeconomic, fiscal, growth and structural policy issues. Previous research experience working with microdata, large administrative datasets or surveys such PLFS, NNSO would be an asset;
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative information; identify the strengths and weaknesses of policies and practices and propose workable improvements or alternatives.
  • Proficiency in working with large databases and advanced statistical software (e.g., STATA, R or Python);
  • Ability to gain the trust and respect of country counterparts, while maintaining objectivity and clear focus on the Bank's mission;
  • Ability to enhance the quality of Bank products through early guidance, constructive feedback, encouraging innovation and risk taking, and establishing links with other networks and relevant partners;
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills to be an effective Bank spokesperson in macroeconomics, growth and fiscal management;
  • Proven ability to work in a team and resolve conflicts constructively;
  • Ability to juggle numerous competing demands and priorities, respond quickly to country and management requests, and set priorities for self and others; and
  • Excellent command of English is essential.
