Springer Nature is seeking a highly motivated Data Scientist with experience in measurement and predictive modeling for its highly-regarded Advanced Analytics and Data Science Team. This is a rare opportunity for someone who has both excellent technical and team management skills.

As a Data Scientist, you'll be working with big data from very highly trafficked websites and content serving the Research publishing division that includes Nature, Springer, BioMedCentral and Palgrave. In this role, the focus will be on establishing measurement and causal inference capability to drive the quality and frequency of decision-making based on testing and measurement. You will be working with stakeholders to develop measurement and learning frameworks, analyze big data and conduct statistical analysis. This role sits in the Data Analytics and Technology Team that supports all of the global team of Research Marketing. You will provide actionable analysis and insight into the different areas of the business: author marketing, eCommerce and institutional marketing.

We are interested in candidates who have come from either a data science background or STEM background. We are keen to hear from candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, but an empathy and interest in scientific discovery and academic research will be valuable. Whatever your background, you will be able to demonstrate experience in applying a broad range of measurement and causal inference techniques to business problems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of two analysts and mentor them supporting the development of their skills and their career growth
  • Build strong and proactive relationships with relevant business stakeholders and senior management, providing insights and analytics to support in achieving the strategic goals of the business
  • Conduct data analysis and data modelling integrating internal and external datasets
  • Work as part of the marketing analytics team to share knowledge and ensure that measurement frameworks are baked in to marketing activity
  • Development of measurement frameworks and testing plans
  • Establishing design of experiments, measurement and testing best practice
  • Gathering, analysing and blending data to produce business and customer insights, and give recommendations on how to further improve Springer Natures products, services and platforms
  • Increase the adoption of data science, standardise analytics tools across the marketing organisation, improve data management and reporting, and make data led insight accessible to the business
  • Being an advocate for a data-driven culture, share thought leadership on tools and best practices
  • Introducing compelling data visualizations and interactive dashboards that allow right decision-making in a timely manner
  • Leading the journey towards more advanced and predictive analytics using statistical modelling, machine learning and AI

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Experience & Skills
  • Experience in leading a team or mentoring team members developing their skills and enhancing their career progress
  • Ability to extract, cleanse and combine data and make sense of it using software and tools like SQL, Big Query, Python, R, Tableau & Datastudio (Experience of work in Python and Big Query environment preferred)
  • Experience of working at a mid-senior level in a large, complex organisation, and managing relationships with peers and collaborators to deliver work and influence plans and strategy
  • Ability to understand business drivers and use this to ensure analytical work is focussed on measureable results, and to communicate analysis conclusions to a non-technical audience in compelling and action orientated way
  • Ability to perform advanced statistical analysis (regression and classification, linear and non-linear regression, logistic regression and multivariate analysis)
  • Experience with multivariate analysis, clustering, decision tree modelling and other advanced techniques (factor analysis, kernel machines, hidden Markov model, etc.)
  • Demonstrable experience in designing and running experiments such as randomised control studies, A/B studies and quasi-experiments using Bayesian causal inference technique
  • Strong analytical, statistical and machine learning understanding and the desire to learn more
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to tell compelling stories from the data
  • Strong ability to influence, with highly effective negotiation and presentation skills
  • Experience in identifying patterns and connecting different pieces of information to deliver unobvious insights drawing information from diverse and varied sources
  • Demonstrable experience of using data insights and analytics to add tangible value in achieving the wider goals and strategy of the business
  • Excellent analytical problem solving capabilities coupled with business acumen
  • Well organized and accurate with good time management
  • Good networker, able to build up effective relations with internal business partners
Qualifications
  • University degree with a strong analytical/quantitative background or equivalent experience (e.g. Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Econometrics, Physics, Computer Science etc.) You are likely to also have a postgraduate or professional qualification with a strong statistical element
