Job Summary
The Supplier Quality Engineer / Manager is a key role in the Wabtec company Sourcing & Quality organizations & is accountable for:
1. Achieving Supplier Quality goals (PPAP execution, NCMR reduction, SCAR , Audits etc.) for assigned supplier base , commodity or manufacturing shops.
2. Contributing to growth plans with existing & new suppliers.
3. Contributing to continually improve supplier quality performance of existing suppliers
4. Working in a boundary-less manner with diverse teams to achieve the above results
Essential Responsibilities

The Commodity Supplier Quality Manager has to develop & maintain objectives to achieve the following responsibilities:
1. Accurate & rigorous evaluation of current and potential suppliers using multiple tools
2. On-time execution of New Component Introduction (PPAP) projects
3. Lead Maintain & upgrade product & process quality at suppliers
4. Drive & ensure compliance to supplier facing processes (Audits, PPAP, SCARs, SDRs, etc.)
5. Identify & qualify new products & suppliers in the region to drive growth
6. Collaborate with other functions (Engineering as required to execute PPAP projects)
7. Provide seamless shop support to ensure right quality product delivered to Customer- India and Global locations (US, Mexico, South Africa etc..)
8. Implement containment and corrective action plan for any supplier NCMR in manufacturing or service shops.
9. Drive Supplier Excellence program for Supplier upgradations to meet Wabtec expectations SQDC parameter and building strategic partnership.
10. Proactively engagement at initial stage of product development/ resourcing / localizations of parts and complete thatch review involving all stakeholders – suppliers, engineering customer quality. Make sure first time right the executions of projects.
The details of the key processes are:
1. New Supplier Evaluation / on boarding: Rigorously execute the supplier evaluation process including quality & compliance audits/assessments to ensure that only appropriately qualified suppliers are taken through the process. Work with sourcing/commodity team to meet business objectives of new supplier addition.
2. Production part approvals: Have a good understanding of the following: Drawings, specifications, PPAP Process, applicable tools (FMEA, GR&R, Control plans, Sampling, Capability studies, etc.) Understand & use tools rigorously to mitigate risk of non-conformant product from shipping from a supplier's facility. Train & drive suppliers to use our tools & upload objective evidence of PPAP step closure. Work closely with Engineering team to ensure adequate understanding of product risks & severities of failure. Lead robust root cause analysis & corrective actions as required. Work closely with Sourcing team to ensure PPAP timelines are adhered to & stated capacity is established
3. Conduct regular Global and local Non confirming parts review, drive containment and segregation with Supplier and drive Root Cause Analysis and corrective actions to ensure right quality of parts offered to Manufacturing shop
4. Audits (Process, Product, Quality systems, SRG/Compliance, 'Eyes always Open'): Obtain a sound understanding of Wabtec expectations on audits. Conduct audits in keeping with good practices & publish professional reports in the appropriate system. Identify & communicate best practices/risks Work with supplier & other stakeholders to close findings & improve supplier processes
5. Problem-solving: Monitor Defects/NCMRs'/Feedback for suppliers to identify any existing problems Use DMAIC methodology to identify & eliminate root cause sustainably on appropriate system
6. Participate in planning of supplier quality activities, share knowledge with team, training, etc.
All these responsibilities will need to be discharged in consultation with Supplier Quality Leader, other SQE's & Sourcing team and appropriate shop quality teams.
Qualifications/Requirements

  • The candidate shall be a Graduate in Mechanical/Production/Metallurgy Engineering from a reputed institute & shall have a sound academic record.

- The candidate shall have between 10 - 18 years of experience working in a similar profession & industry. (Candidates with lesser experience may be considered with appropriate adjustment in role).
  • Knowledge of GD&T, Process design, tools and Fixture Selections, Hands on experience on process optimizations, VAVE Idea generations and lead the productivity savings.

  • Experts in Inspections protocols and Methods with Knowledge of Precision instruments – CMM, Roundness tester, form testing, Metallurgic testing, Metallography inspections.

  • He/She needs to have a sound understanding of contemporary manufacturing, control and inspection technologies in the following product groups/commodities. Expertise would necessarily include first hand work in at least 2 areas below:

a) Gear and Critical machining:

  • He/ She should have sound knowledge Gear Manufacturing process Like gear cutting- Hobbing. Shaping, Skiving, Broaching, and grinding,

  • Develop the inspections plan and well conversant with quality requirements as per DIN/AGMA std.,

  • Knowledge to set-up quality plan for Raw material as per ASTM std.,

  • Experience of Heat treatment process Case carburized/ Induction hardening parts and through hardened - audit Considering validations of Process and Parts – Added advantage on NADCAP/ CQI9 process audit.

  • Field failure analysis on Gear, Pinion and shafts

  • Knowledge/ experience on Forging, critical machining, and assembly process- including precision superfinish process.

  • Provide and suggest tooling and inspection methods required to ensure the robustness of the manufacturing process to deliver quality, reliability, and consistency.

  • Work with cutting tools manufacturers and operations to design most efficient cutting and grinding tools

  • Identifies, recommends, and implements improvements and modifications in sequence of operations, equipment utilization to increase efficiency and cost savings.

  • Work with supplier’s team teams to properly coordinate workflow, time efficiencies, manufacturing engineering availability and skill level.

  • Provides technical leadership/training and/or coaching to other team members.

b) Critical fastener’s:

  • He/ She should have sound knowledge on Critical fasteners with set of quality requirements for externally threaded components used in applications where high cyclic loading occurs or in safety critical applications.

  • Sound knowledge supplier base basically on critical fastener manufacturer with Plating process like Zinc flake, electro chrome, clear zinc, yellow zinc, GEOMET, etc.) and phosphating.

  • Knowledge of Manufacture Process-Routed through, Traceability -Raw material heat number, Forging batch, heat-treatment number, Rolling batch etc..

  • Expert in setting quality plan at raw material with requirements of ASTM A354 , ASTM A449..etc and dimensional requirements as per ANSI/ASME .

  • Including knowledge of Ultra sonic testing for internal cracks, ED Current inspections MPI testing’s etc.

  • Detail Understanding on Metric and Inches – with Grade and Class system.

  • Knowledge on Reducing the Risk of Embrittlement… the Parts heat treated to high-strength values.

  • Experience with filed failure analysis and resolution of high-risk crack issues, Internal Defects examinations, Visual examination of a longitudinal section of a head reveal no cracks, laps or porosity etc..

  • Experience to complete First Article Inspection for the PPAP.

  • Experience of Heat treatment process, Considering validations of Process and Parts – Specifically on hardened parts.

  • Knowledge on thread inspections for dimensions, also on thread form and discontinuity - with Implementation on right inspection/ gauges on various stage of manufacturing.

  • Provides technical leadership/training and/or coaching to other team members.

- Non-metallic products - Ability to understand & support supplier proposals on manufacturing processes, control methods & measurement systems related to a wide variety of non-metallic products including Fiber Reinforced Plastics, Composite materials, Plastic, Rubber bonded products, hoses, etc.)

Desired Characteristics

3. Candidates with certifications in technology, quality systems, audit or testing areas can be preferred based on relevance of certification
4. Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification is preferred (Wabtec Employees only).
5. Ability to cope with multiple complex situations daily
