A Commis 1, also known as a prep cook, is a member of a culinary team who prepares, cooks, and serves food under the guidance of more experienced chefs. Their responsibilities include:
Food preparation: Preparing ingredients, cooking, and plating dishes
Quality control: Ensuring food quality and consistency, and meeting agreed standards
Sanitation and cleaning: Following sanitation and cleaning procedures, and ensuring work stations are properly sanitized
Inventory: Monitoring stock movement, requisitioning items, and accepting and storing deliveries
Kitchen maintenance: Performing daily and weekly activities such as temperature checks, food labeling, and storage
Kitchen safety: Removing hazards and reporting any defects in the kitchen or equipment
Customer service: Maintaining a high level of customer service
Training: Attending training courses as identified for appropriate development
Communication: Communicating clearly and effectively in a kitchen environment
