Job Description

An operator for SID (Sponge Iron Division) Mechanical would be responsible for operating heavy machinery, specifically a remote-controlled demolition robot like those manufactured by Brokk. The operator would work within the mechanical maintenance and operations division of a steel or sponge iron plant.
Key duties and responsibilities

• Machine operation: Safely and efficiently operate a Brokk remote-controlled demolition robot to perform tasks such as tearing out refractory (kiln bricks), removing slag and coatings, and other heavy-duty demolition jobs.
• Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections, maintenance, and cleaning of the Brokk machine and its attachments. This includes checking hydraulics, electrical systems, and machine components to ensure safe and optimal performance.
• Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve minor mechanical issues that arise during operation. Coordinate with the maintenance team for more complex repairs.
• Material handling: Use the Brokk robot with various attachments (such as breakers, crushers, and grapples) to remove, sort, and load debris and other materials.
• Safety and compliance: Strictly adhere to all plant safety protocols and procedures, which are of high importance when working with heavy machinery in potentially hazardous industrial environments. This includes wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Reporting: Keep detailed logs and records of machine operation, maintenance performed, and any malfunctions or incidents that occurred during a shift.
• Coordination: Work with other teams, such as production and electrical, to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely and to minimize plant downtime.

Required skills and qualifications

• Experience: Previous experience operating heavy industrial equipment, preferably with remote-controlled demolition robots or similar machinery.
• Technical knowledge: A strong understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems. The ability to read and interpret technical manuals and specifications is also necessary.
• Problem-solving: A strong capacity for troubleshooting and finding solutions for equipment malfunctions under pressure.
• Attention to detail: Meticulous attention to detail to ensure precision during delicate operations and to maintain accurate records.
• Safety mindset: A firm commitment to safety procedures and regulations, with the ability to identify potential hazards.
• Physical fitness: The physical ability to perform manual labor, work in a potentially hot and dusty industrial environment, and stand for long periods.
• Communication: Effective communication skills for reporting to supervisors and coordinating with other plant personnel.

• This is a physically demanding role in an industrial setting, often requiring shift-based work.
• The operator is positioned remotely during demolition, keeping them away from the most hazardous areas of the plant, such as hot kilns.
