Job Description


:

1) Job Purpose: Write the purpose for which the job exists

Lead the Molecular Design & Synthesis group. Drive the innovation strategy and build on new molecule portfolio in the diverse technology areas such as Acrylic, Vinyl Acetate, Urethane, Polyester, Silicone. Plan, Organize, Monitor & Implement global projects to ensure world- class speciality Product Offerings and Technical Service for the customers.

2) Job Context & Major Challenges:

Epoxy Division was established in 1992, as a joint venture company with Japanese partners and process licensor (M/S Tohoto Kasai) to produce 10000MTA Epoxy resin. The plant had 35 grades of Epoxy resin and was made in the same plant. In the year 1996, the plant was expanded to 30000MTA by installing one more plant which was dedicated for solid Epoxy and old plant was kept for liquid epoxy. In year 2000 the new plant of solid was converted into multipurpose to produce liquid epoxy due to increased demand of liquid resin. In year 2002 the unit initiated entry into specialty epoxy resins with introduction of Pilot plant, Application Laboratory and Development lab. The first speciality plant MP (multipurpose) was set up in year 2004 to produce 7500 MTA, speciality resin. In year 2006 the unit set up a full-fledged well equipped R&D and Application Development Centre. The second specialtiy plant was commissioned in the year 2008. New plant of 70000MTA capacity has been commisioned in Vilayat, Gujarat in 2013. A new application development center, Performance Material Research Center has been setup at ABSTC, Taloja from 2014 . Epoxy division has fully acquired CTP GMBH and 50% of CTP AM, which brings in another 20000MTA capacity to the Division.PMRC will work on epoxy technology and applications and well as other chemistries such as polyurethanes, Acrylic etc.

The business has the potential to grow to ~$1bn in the next few years, and R&D would be a major driver of this growth. The R&D focus areas would be:

  • Growth opportunities for scientists to grow and flourish in R&D.
This department will attend to focused development, new business venture at the epoxy group, meeting new customer demands / Insulator business is expanding into new areas wherein they will be requiring technical expertise in the area of Silicone which is fast growing in the electrical industries. Epoxy group can provide the technical and other services for product development meeting the customer requirements which currently is not available in Epoxy or in Insulator business.

Challenges:
  • Technical complexity \xe2\x80\x93 To continuously survey and study relevant upcoming standards and be tactful during lab proficiency assessment and able to impart knowledge.
  • Time spent on issue resolution: There is a constant demand for the position holder to resolving customer issues independently, with limited resources and time on hand.
  • Different customer preferences: Demand for environmentally friendly products is far higher in the U.S. and Europe than elsewhere, and segment teams need to differentiate accordingly, thus increasing effort and time spent.
  • Accuracy & Reliability : To maintain accuracy & reliability of chemical analysis. Therefore, task warrants high proficiency in testing & analysis
  • Epoxy resin has wide range of applications within the Adhesives/ Silicone Industries. Both speciality and mass market and price expectation from customer is challenging.
  • Market demands continuous innovation to improve quality of end product.
  • Cost competition leads to lower profit margin.
  • To sustain competitive technological breakthroughs
  • Training the technical people in novel and advanced technologies is a major challenge.
  • Difficult to Establish New Technology in market if cost is high.

New Product Development

Implement and ensure New product development target is met
  • Design, execute and ensure new product development plans, monthly/annual action plans and investment, maintenance and expenses plans.
  • To provide leadership and create enthusiasm for doing work, literature survey among members of the department, to develop team work and balance the strengths of individuals, allocating responsibilities as appropriate.
  • To regularly monitor the work of the team members, ensuring that they are following the correct guidelines for project development and adhering to policies, including marking, and schemes of work and observing their work.
  • To define and develop the innovation portfolio, priorities and schemes of work regularly and to monitor their implementation, setting technical targets as necessary, working within the R&D guidelines.
Technical Services to Customer

To Support Customer in resolving Technical issues.
  • Resolve product issues during scale up, production and customer evaluation activities.
  • Coordinating with QA/QC for resolving product related issues. Revised test methods & specifications.
  • Resolve product issued during scale up, production and customer evaluation activities.
Planning, Budgeting & Cost Control

Manage maintenance of R&D Lab activities evolving annual budget for targeted level.
  • Monitor and maintain expenditure for effective cost control
  • Identify potential cost saving areas, improvement areas in R&D
  • To support in monitoring specialty materials inventory and take steps for effective control.
  • To support improvement proposals and its implementation.
Support System Management

To support in implementing of ISO system

Support ISO practices & other systems

Implement audit reports and plan for improvement and carry out implementation

Safety Health & Environment in R&D Synthesis Lab

To support, implement and ensure safety and adherence of statutory compliance related to Safety, Health and Environment with respect to R&D Synthesis Lab
  • To ensure compliance of all safety requirements as stipulated by the Factories Act & environment related statutory requirements.
  • To support and implement audits and take corrective actions for audit points
Support in People Development

To support in developing a congenial work culture by effective management of people to improve productivity, growth & motivation levels of employees to institutionalize best organizing practices in R&D Lab.
  • To support in implementing set KRAs, Objectives, performance targets and training need identification & communication of role clarity in the Dept.
  • Inculcate group values/policies/ vision/ mission & objectives.
  • Recommends training for skill through behavioral/ IDP improvement.
  • To identify skill gaps
  • Co-ordinate & monitor the development of team members
  • Identify and reward suitable person for reward and recognition
