X-ray / Ultrasound Technician - Roles and Responsibilities
General Role:
An X-ray / Ultrasound Technician is a trained healthcare professional who operates imaging equipment to help doctors diagnose and monitor various medical conditions. They produce diagnostic images using X-rays, ultrasound waves, or other technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
1.
Patient Preparation
Explain procedures to patients to reduce anxiety.
Obtain informed consent before the procedure.
Position patients correctly to ensure accurate imaging.
Ensure patients remove jewelry or metal objects if needed.
2.
Operating Imaging Equipment
Operate X-ray machines, ultrasound scanners, and other radiographic equipment.
Adjust settings on machines to capture clear, diagnostic-quality images.
Monitor equipment performance and ensure it's functioning safely.
3.
Image Acquisition
Capture images of organs, tissues, and bones as per physician's request.
Ensure correct imaging angles and proper image clarity.
Perform repeat scans if necessary.
4.
Patient Safety
Follow radiation safety protocols (for X-ray).
Use protective gear (e.g., lead aprons) to shield patients and themselves.
Monitor for allergic reactions to contrast agents, if used.
5.
Documentation and Reporting
Maintain accurate patient records and image files.
Assist radiologists by providing preliminary findings or observations.
Input data into hospital information systems or PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System).
6.
Equipment Maintenance
Clean and maintain imaging equipment regularly.
Report malfunctions or schedule servicing as needed.
Ensure availability of necessary supplies (gel, films, protective gear, etc.).
7.
Collaboration with Medical Team
Work closely with radiologists, physicians, and nurses.
Communicate urgent or unusual findings promptly.
Assist during interventional procedures (e.g., ultrasound-guided biopsies).
Skills & Qualities Required
Attention to detail.
Good communication and patient care skills.
Technical knowledge of imaging equipment.
Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology.
Ability to stay calm under pressure.
