Job Description

Job Purpose:

To install, maintain, and repair the internal data and electrical wiring systems across the university campus. The Wire Man ensures that all IT and network cabling is properly installed, labelled, and functioning efficiently to support academic and administrative operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Install, terminate, and maintain LAN, telephone, and fiber optic cables across campus buildings. Assist in setting up network points, Wi-Fi routers, switches, and other IT infrastructure. Conduct routine inspection of cabling and identify issues such as damaged wires, loose connections, or signal loss. Support IT engineers during system upgrades, equipment installation, and troubleshooting. Maintain proper documentation of all cabling layouts and network connections. Ensure adherence to safety standards and best practices for wiring and cable management. Assist in the relocation of computer systems, printers, and other hardware requiring data connectivity. Label and organize cables for easy identification and maintenance. Coordinate with the electrical team for safe integration with power systems. Provide quick response to IT service requests related to cabling and connectivity.

Skills Required:

Knowledge of data cabling standards (CAT6, fiber optics, patch panels, etc.). Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and floor layouts. Basic understanding of network devices (routers, switches, access points). Familiar with crimping, punching, and testing network cables. Physically fit and comfortable working in ceilings, ducts, or confined areas. Attention to detail and ability to follow technical instructions. Good teamwork and communication skills.
