The NICU Staff Nurse is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to critically ill newborns, ensuring close monitoring, timely interventions, and adherence to neonatal care protocols. The role demands high accuracy, compassion, and strong clinical skills in handling premature and high-risk infants.
2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Clinical Care
Monitor vital signs of neonates including heart rate, temperature, oxygen saturation, and respiration.
Provide care for premature, low birth weight, and critically ill babies.
Administer medications, IV fluids, tube feeding, and oxygen therapy as prescribed.
Assist doctors during neonatal procedures such as intubation, catheterization, and resuscitation.
Maintain thermoregulation using incubators, warmers, and phototherapy units.
Handle neonatal emergencies promptly, including CPR and resuscitation.
B. Equipment Handling
Operate NICU medical equipment such as ventilators, CPAP, syringe pumps, infusion pumps, radiant warmers, monitors, and phototherapy units.
Ensure proper calibration, cleaning, and functioning of all equipment.
C. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain accurate nursing notes, observation charts, medication records, and fluid balance charts.
Report any abnormal findings or critical changes to the doctor and NICU incharge immediately.
Ensure proper handover during shift changes.
D. Infection Control & Safety
Follow strict infection control protocols and hand hygiene guidelines.
Maintain aseptic techniques during all procedures.
Ensure proper waste management and cleanliness in the NICU environment.
E. Family Support & Communication
Provide emotional support and education to parents regarding neonatal conditions, feeding methods, and discharge care.
Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations with empathy.
F. Team Coordination
Work closely with neonatologists, pediatricians, respiratory therapists, and other nursing staff.
Participate in departmental meetings and continuing nursing education programs.
3. Qualifications & Skills
GNM / B.Sc. Nursing / M.Sc. Nursing (Registered Nurse & Midwife).
1-3 years experience in NICU preferred
Strong clinical knowledge of neonatal care.
Good communication and observation skills.
Ability to work under pressure and handle critical situations.
