Job Description

A VTL (Vertical Turret Lathe) Operator sets up, operates, and maintains NC/CNC or manual vertical lathes to machine large, heavy, or complex metal components according to technical blueprints. Key responsibilities include loading parts with overhead cranes, setting tools, checking tolerances with precision measuring instruments, and ensuring production efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Machine Operation & Setup:

Set up and operate CNC VTL machines, including loading/unloading heavy components using cranes or hoists.

Technical Interpretation:

Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and sketches to determine specifications.

Tooling & Machining:

Select and set up cutting tools, fixtures, and work offsets.

Quality Control:

Inspect finished parts using micrometers, calipers, and gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances (GD&T).

Maintenance & Troubleshooting:

Perform daily preventive maintenance (lubrication, cleaning) and troubleshoot minor machine issues.

Programming:

Edit or optimize CNC programs (G-code/M-code) as needed.

Requirements and Qualifications

Experience:

1-5 years of hands-on experience as a VTL operator or machinist in a manufacturing environment.

Education:

ITI, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent vocational training.

Skills:

Proficiency with Fanuc controls or similar CNC interfaces. Strong knowledge of metal properties, cutting tools, and machining processes.

Physical Strength:

Ability to lift heavy materials and work with overhead cranes.

Safety Compliance:

Knowledge of safety procedures, including OSHA standards and proper use of PPE.
