VTL Setter cum Operator - Roles & Responsibilities

1. Machine Setup & Preparation

Read and understand engineering drawings, operation sheets, and work instructions. Select appropriate tools, inserts, and fixtures as per job requirements. Set the job on the chuck or fixture securely using proper clamping methods. Set tool offsets, work offsets, and part zero points accurately. Verify program correctness (CNC program number, revision, and path). Ensure all measuring instruments are calibrated and available before starting the job.

2. Machine Operation

Operate the VTL machine as per the approved process sheet or program. Monitor machining parameters such as speed, feed, depth of cut, coolant flow, etc. Ensure proper chip removal and coolant circulation during operation. Inspect the first piece and get approval from the quality department before batch running. Operate the machine safely following standard safety protocols.

3. Quality & Inspection

Measure components using Vernier, micrometer, bore gauge, height gauge, etc. Maintain part dimensions within tolerance limits. Record in-process inspection data in job cards or inspection sheets. Immediately inform the supervisor or quality department if any deviation or abnormality occurs. Avoid rework/rejection by maintaining quality discipline.

4. Machine Maintenance

Perform daily machine checklist (coolant level, lubrication, air pressure, cleaning). Ensure proper housekeeping of machine and surrounding area. Inform the maintenance team in case of abnormal noise, vibration, or breakdown. Change worn-out tools, inserts, and update tool life records.

5. Production & Documentation

Achieve daily production targets with minimum rejection and downtime. Fill production log sheets and maintain tool change and downtime records. Follow 5S and Kaizen practices at the workplace. Ensure traceability of material, job cards, and inspection records.

6. Safety & Discipline

Wear PPE (safety shoes, gloves, goggles, ear protection). Follow safety procedures and never bypass interlocks or guards. Maintain punctuality, proper communication, and coordination with the team. Participate in daily review meetings and continuous improvement activities.
