The Big VMC Setter cum Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring
large-size Vertical Machining Centers
used for machining heavy, oversized, and high-precision components.
The position requires strong technical expertise, hands-on machining skills, and the ability to handle large components safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
1. Machine Setup & Job Preparation
Set up VMC machines with correct fixtures, tools, tool holders, and reference points.
Load NC programs and verify machining sequences.
Perform dry-run checks to avoid collisions and confirm safe machining paths.
Set work offsets, tool offsets, and adjust machining parameters as required.
2. Machining Operations
Operate VMC machines for milling, drilling, tapping, pocketing, profiling, and complex milling operations.
Execute machining operations as per process sheets, drawings, and instructions.
Monitor cycle times, cutting conditions, and tool behavior.
Achieve consistent production output without rejection or rework.
3. Dimensional Inspection & Quality Control
Inspect components using precision measuring instruments:
Vernier, micrometer
Height gauge, bore gauge
Dial indicators
Angle plates, profile gauges
Thread plug gauges, thread ring gauges
Conduct first-piece and in-process inspections coordinating with line inspectors.
Ensure compliance with dimensional tolerances, GD&T, and surface finish requirements.
Coordinate with QA for final inspection and resolve quality issues.
4. Tooling Management
Set and adjust tool lengths, cutter compensation, and offsets.
Replace worn-out inserts and tools in coordination with Tool Room.
Suggest improvements in tooling strategies to reduce cycle time and improve tool life.
Maintain proper handling and storage of fixtures, tools, and accessories.
5. Machine & Process Monitoring
Monitor machine conditions, coolant levels, spindle behaviour, vibration, and alarms.
Report machinery issues to Maintenance immediately.
Identify machining problems and implement corrective actions.
Ensure smooth machine operation and minimal downtime.
6. Safety, Housekeeping & Discipline
Follow all safety procedures and PPE requirements.
Maintain clean and organized workstations following 5S standards.
Handle heavy tools, fixtures, and workpieces safely.
Report hazards, near misses, or unsafe practices.
7. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain production logs, tool usage sheets, inspection records, and job cards.
Record deviations, tool changes, and machine downtime.
Provide shift handover details to ensure continuity.
Update ERP/MIS entries when required.
Required Qualifications
Education
ITI (Machinist/Fitter) / Diploma in Mechanical, Production, or related trade.
Basic CNC programming knowledge is an added advantage.
Experience
2-6 years of experience as a CNC VMC operator or setter.
Experience in aerospace/medical/precision machining industries preferred.
Hands-on experience with Fanuc/Siemens/Mitsubishi controllers.
Skills
Strong knowledge of VMC machine setup and CNC operation.
Ability to read engineering drawings and interpret GD&T.
Good understanding of cutting tools, fixtures, and machine parameters.
Skilled in using precision measuring instruments.
Strong troubleshooting ability and attention to detail.
