Vice President, Senior Managing Counsel, Technology

Overview

Mastercard is seeking a Vice President, Senior Managing Counsel, Technology, to join our global legal team supporting Mastercard Technology and focused on driving innovative legal coverage for strategically important technology initiatives, information security matters and technology infrastructure operations. The team works closely with partners across Mastercard in technology, operations, data privacy, security, regulatory, product and sales teams, as well as other colleagues in the law department.

This front-line position will interface with internal and external stakeholders, including senior management, and involve legal support for technology matters involved in localization of enterprise architecture and operations globally as well as local cybersecurity matters, threat and response management, customer and vendor contract negotiations and assessments, engagement with regulatory and public policy on technology and cybersecurity matters, info security enterprise certification support and managing potential technology and security legal risks related to the Mastercard enterprise, including its core payments business and acquired businesses, as well as advise on emerging technology matters such as open source and cloud governance.

This full-time role is based in Pune, India and reports to Senior Vice President, Assistant General Counsel, Marketing & Technology, in the Law & Policy department.

Role

This role requires the provision of high-quality, senior-level legal advice to the Mastercard Technology business unit on a broad range of contract, operational and security matters, to help build, operate and maintain our services in local markets and also to ensure compliance with applicable laws and contractual commitments. Such activities include, but not limited to:

  • Lead local legal support for Mastercard Technology, including Corporate Security matters, in Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe, Middle East & Africa.
  • Provide high quality technology and practical commercial legal advice to assigned business units and markets, providing comprehensive, end-to-end legal support by facilitating thoughtful risk-taking to enable Mastercard to deliver on strategy.
  • Provide strategic guidance and advice on important forward-looking technology initiatives involving enterprise architecture, platforms, products, services, automation, information security, cloud migrations and upcoming technologies like Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Quantum computing, and the likes.
  • Foster and build strong relationships with business stakeholders, senior management and department colleagues to promote cross-functional collaboration, as well as ensure seamless legal advice and support to achieve positive results for Mastercard.
  • Provide legal guidance related to the entire life cycle of a technology solution, starting from planning, development and distribution of new product and platform offerings, including review of information technology legal considerations, vendor contract-related requirements, documentation content review, intellectual property rights, regulatory compliance, data privacy design, collaborating seamlessly with law department subject matter experts in these areas.
  • Structure, draft, and negotiate various agreements, including complex technology outsourcing contracts with strategic partners, financial institutions and vendors and ensure contracts are consistent with corporate strategy and internal policies and procedures.
  • Communicates changes in laws and regulations and trains and educates business clients on risks, legal consequences, and alternative actions, as needed.
All About You
  • Law degree from an established and reputed university.
  • Experience in handling leadership role supporting multiple jurisdictions.
  • Demonstrated transactional technology background and sound business and legal judgment. Payments or financial services experience a plus.
  • Hands-on experience on outsourcing risk management and diligence.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with information security laws and regulations and ability to translate that knowledge to deliver relevant and actionable guidance to business.
  • Experience supporting evolving cybersecurity programs, knowledge of cybersecurity technology tools and capabilities, cybersecurity standards, frameworks, risk assessments and certification processes such as ISO and other compliance frameworks, and related customer and supplier contract negotiations.
  • General understanding of regulatory environment, government and law enforcement as it relates to technology operations, cyber investigations and computer crimes, and incident and threat reporting.
  • Fair understanding of data centres operations and related issues.
  • Be a proven individual contributor with ability to work as part of a team, and have strong collaborative and multi-tasking skills and experience with coordinating cross-functional teams to execute initiatives and transactions.
  • Must be able to strike a balance between the two principal objectives of being a facilitator to the business and protecting the interests of the company.
  • Quick learner, works well under pressure in fast-paced, dynamic work environment, ability to grasp complex new business concepts, good commercial acumen and creative approach to problem-solving.
  • Has a proactive, time-sensitive, results-driven approach in carrying out all duties, obligations, and responsibilities.
