Job Description

A translator converts written material from one language to another, while an interpreter conveys spoken or signed messages in real-time. Both roles require fluency in at least two languages, strong cultural awareness, and the ability to accurately render meaning, tone, and context. Key duties include translating documents, interpreting conversations, researching terminology, proofreading, and collaborating with clients to meet project requirements. Translator duties

Convert written material:

Translate documents, websites, and other materials, maintaining original meaning, tone, and style.

Edit and proofread:

Review translated materials for accuracy, grammar, and punctuation.

Research terminology:

Use dictionaries and databases to ensure accurate translation of technical or industry-specific terms.

Manage projects:

Work with clients to understand project needs, provide estimates, and meet deadlines.

Format content:

Prepare subtitles or ensure translated content maintains its original format.
Interpreter duties

Interpret spoken messages:

Listen to a speaker and interpret their message in real-time, either simultaneously (while the person is still speaking) or consecutively (after the speaker pauses).

Facilitate communication:

Act as a bridge between parties during meetings, conferences, or other events.

Handle different settings:

Work in various environments, such as community, medical, or conference settings.

Stay prepared:

Research the subject matter to be discussed before an interpretation session.
Common skills and qualifications

Language proficiency:

Fluency in at least two languages, including strong writing skills in the target language.

Cultural understanding:

Ability to recognize and adapt to cultural nuances, differences, and context.

Accuracy and attention to detail:

Meticulously convey the original meaning and tone without errors.

Active listening:

A keen ability to listen carefully to spoken messages to ensure a precise interpretation.
