Job Overview:

A Traffic Surveyor collects, records, and analyzes data related to traffic flow, vehicle types, pedestrian movements, travel patterns, and other transport-related activity. The data gathered is used by urban planners, local authorities, and transport engineers to design safer and more efficient roads and transport systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct manual and/or automated traffic counts at designated locations. Observe and record vehicle and pedestrian movements using tally counters, cameras, or data logging equipment. Set up and monitor traffic survey equipment (e.g., pneumatic tubes, ANPR cameras, GPS trackers). Collect data on vehicle types, speeds, directions, and travel times. Work outdoors in various weather conditions and at different times, including early mornings or late evenings. Ensure accurate data recording and adherence to safety protocols. Submit completed data sheets or digital reports in a timely and accurate manner. Liaise with supervisors and clients to clarify data requirements and locations.

Qualifications and Skills:

No formal qualifications required; however, a background in data collection or transportation studies is an asset. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work independently and follow instructions. Good time management and reliability. Basic knowledge of GPS and data collection tools is a plus. Willingness to work outdoors for extended periods and in varying weather conditions. Valid driver's license may be required for some assignments.

Working Conditions:

Field-based work, often in urban or roadside environments. May involve early starts, late finishes, or overnight work depending on survey type. Temporary or project-based roles common, but longer-term positions may be available with transport consultancies or government agencies.
