The Toolroom Manager will be responsible for leading and managing all toolroom activities, including die maintenance, tool manufacturing, troubleshooting, and tool lifecycle management for steel-based die-casting operations. The role requires strong expertise in New Product Development (NPD), tool design, production planning & control (PPC), tool delivery management, and detailed tool breakdown analysis to ensure high-quality output and uninterrupted production.
Key Responsibilities
1. Toolroom Operations Management
Oversee toolroom activities, including tool manufacturing, modification, repair, and scheduled maintenance.
Ensure timely availability of dies, tools, jigs, and fixtures for die-casting operations.
Plan and implement preventive and predictive maintenance for all tools.
Maintain tool life data and ensure tool performance meets production requirements.
2. Tool Design & Technical Expertise
Review, interpret, and validate tool and die designs, drawings, and technical specifications.
Provide technical guidance on die design improvements to enhance tool durability and manufacturability.
Coordinate with design teams to support CAD/CAM development and design modifications.
3. New Product Development (NPD)
Lead tooling feasibility studies for new components and steel-based die-cast parts.
Participate in proto development, tool trials, and sample submission (PPAP).
Coordinate with design, quality, and production teams for smooth NPD execution.
4. PPC (Planning & Production Control) Supervision
Coordinate with PPC and production teams to plan tool requirements for daily, weekly, and monthly schedules.
Track progress of tool manufacturing, modifications, and deliveries as per production plans.
Monitor capacity, manpower planning, and resource allocation to ensure timely tool readiness.
5. Tool Delivery Management
Manage end-to-end tool delivery timelines for new tools, repairs, and modifications.
Communicate regularly with customers, suppliers, and internal teams regarding delivery commitments.
Ensure the documentation of tool history, approvals, and dispatch protocols.
Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for tool breakdowns or failures.
Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
Identify opportunities for process optimization, cost reduction, and quality improvement.
7. Team Leadership & Coordination
Lead, guide, and supervise toolmakers, machinists, and support staff.
Implement 5S, Kaizen, and lean practices within the toolroom.
Ensure a culture of discipline, safety, and continuous improvement.
8. Vendor Coordination & Material Control
Manage tooling vendors for tool manufacturing, repair, and outsourcing activities.
Ensure availability of raw materials, consumables, electrodes, and spare parts for toolroom operations.
Evaluate vendor performance based on quality, timelines, and cost.
Key Skills & Competencies
Strong technical knowledge in steel tool manufacturing, die-casting tools, machining, CNC/VMC/EDM operations.
Proficiency in NPD, tool design, GD&T, and CAD/CAM (preferred: SolidWorks, NX, AutoCAD).
Expertise in tool breakdown analysis, problem-solving, and engineering data interpretation.
Strong planning and PPC coordination experience.
Excellent leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Qualifications & Experience
Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Tool & Die Engineering, or related field.
10-20 years of experience in toolroom operations in a die-casting or steel manufacturing industry.
Hands-on experience in NPD, tool design review, PPC support, and breakdown analysis is mandatory.
Work Environment
Production-focused environment requiring close coordination with toolroom, production, quality, design, and NPD teams.
