An OT Scrub Nurse supports surgical teams by preparing sterile operating rooms, assisting during procedures, and ensuring patient safety in hospitals.
Key Responsibility:
1. Pre-operative Duties:
Ensure all necessary surgical instruments, equipment, sterile supplies, drapes, gowns, gloves etc. are ready and sterile.
Check functionality of surgical instruments and OT equipment before each surgery.
Verify patient identity, surgical consent, Type of procedure, and surgery readiness.
Assist in positioning the patient on the operating table as required.
2. Intra-operative (During Surgery) Duties:
Scrub, gown, and glove up using strict aseptic (sterile) techniques and maintain sterile field throughout the surgery.
Assist surgeons and surgical team by passing instruments, sutures, sponges, and other required supplies.
Maintain accurate count of surgical instruments, sponges, needles before, during, and after surgery to avoid retention in patient.
Assist anaesthetists or other team members.
Handle surgical specimens properly (labelling, transport) as per protocol.
3. Post-operative Duties & OT Maintenance:
Assist in safe transfer of patient from OT to recovery/post-operative ward.
Ensure instruments and supplies are sterilized and ready for the next case.
Ensure timely restocking and record maintenance.
Maintain all necessary record or registers: surgical logs, instrument count sheets, patient data, OT use, sterilization logs, waste disposal logs.
4. Safety, Sterility:
Follow strict infection control, sterilization, and aseptic protocols at all times.
Ensure proper waste disposal (biohazard disposal), instrument sterilization, and compliance with hospital safety, environment, and quality control procedures.
Participate in OT team briefings, emergencies, and follow protocols for patient safety, equipment safety, and OT environment management.
Qualification:
Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) or B.Sc Nursing.
Knowledge in BLS is Mandatory.
Experience:
1.
Overall
: 6 Years of experience in healthcare handle complex instrumentations, aseptic protocols, and high-risk procedures.
2.
Relevant:
1-3 years in healthcare instrument preparation and counts, assisting surgeons, post-op patient care, OT maintenance, record-keeping.
3. Fresher are also welcome.
4.
Age:
23-27 Years.
5. Familiarity with OT protocols, sterilization, surgical procedures, aseptic techniques, and instrument handling.
6. Based on experience, salary will be confirmed by the management.

1. Communication: Good verbal communication helps coordinate, anticipate needs.
2. Attention to detail: Essential to maintain sterility, correctly count instruments, sponges, needles, track supplies, follow aseptic protocols, avoid contamination or errors.

4. Adaptability and quick thinking / problem-solving: Surgeries can change in plan, unexpected complications can arise, being able to adapt, anticipate surgeon's needs, react to unexpected situations is vital.
5. Teamwork and Collaboration: Often need to coordinate with clinical staff, admin, PR, digital teams, or external partners.
6. Time Management: Good time management helps ensure that tasks (preparing the OT, sterilisation, instrument counts, patient positioning) are done before surgery starts.

Technical Skills:
1. Surgical instruments, tools and equipment: Recognizing instruments, their uses, organizing them, being ready to pass correct ones promptly to surgeon.
2. Sterile technique and infection control / aseptic protocols: Proper scrubbing, gowning/gloving, maintaining sterile field, sterilization of instruments and supplies.
3. Preparing & setting up: Ensuring all instruments, equipment, supplies are ready, patient-positioning, draping.
4. Counting: Keeping accurate count of OT Equipment's before and after surgery to ensure nothing is retained.
5. Patient preparation and intra-operative support: Assisting surgeons, passing instruments, anticipating needs, handling sutures/ligatures or other tasks.
6. Post-operative OT maintenance: After surgery, cleaning OT, sterilizing instruments, restocking supplies, ensuring readiness for next case.
7. Documentation and record-keeping: Recording surgical details, instrument counts, patient details, any intraoperative events, post-operative notes is essential for legal, safety, continuity of care.
