execution-driven
, not trend forecasting or high-concept design.
The designer's core responsibility is to
translate buyer selections, references, or images into accurate, well-executed physical samples
by coordinating artwork, job work, artisans, and tailors.
This role requires strong practical knowledge of Indian textile techniques, sampling workflows, and factory coordination.
Key Responsibilities
1. Buyer Selection to Sample Execution
Understand buyer-selected designs, images, reference samples, or tech packs.
Break down the product into required processes such as printing, embroidery, beading, tassels, trims, stitching, or mixed techniques.
Plan and execute sampling from artwork to final physical sample.
2. Artwork & Technical Preparation
Create or adapt artwork based on buyer selections.
Prepare print-ready files for screen or digital printing.
Prepare embroidery artwork and coordinate DST digitization.
Develop beading, aari, dori, and hand embroidery layouts for craftsmen.
Ensure artwork matches scale, placement, color, and technique required for production.
3. Sampling Coordination
Coordinate with:
Embroidery units and digitizers
Beading and handwork artisans
Printers
Tassel and trim vendors
Tailors and sampling masters
Sit with tailors and craftsmen during sampling to ensure correct execution.
Follow up on timelines, corrections, and revisions until sample approval.
4. Material & Trim Knowledge
Strong understanding of:
Fabrics used in export such as cottons, linens, chambray, canvas, velvet, blends.
Tassels, fringes, cords, braids, laces, and decorative trims.
Beads, sequins, zari, threads, ropes, and embellishment materials.
Ability to suggest practical substitutions if required for sampling feasibility.
5. Tech Pack & Specification Understanding
Read and interpret buyer tech packs.
Translate measurements, construction details, artwork placement, and finish requirements into samples.
Coordinate changes if buyer feedback is received.
6. Image-to-Artwork Capability
When buyers select products from references or images, ability to:
Recreate artwork from images.
Adjust designs to suit Indian production techniques.
Prepare the design for correct execution through job work.
Required Skills & Experience
3-6 years experience in textile or product development for export houses.
Strong working knowledge of:
Printing
Embroidery (computerized and hand)
Aari and hand embroidery
Beading and embellishment
Tassels and trims
Hands-on experience with sampling workflows.
Comfortable coordinating with multiple vendors and craftsmen.
Practical, execution-focused mindset rather than conceptual design orientation.
Basic software knowledge such as CorelDRAW, Illustrator, or similar for artwork preparation.
Good communication skills for internal coordination and follow-ups.
