Description

About Burns & McDonnell India - Oil, Gas and Chemical (OGC)

Burns & McDonnell is an employee owned company with a long history of client focus, safety and quality. Burns & McDonnell India supports global Oil, Gas and Chemical projects for clients who depend on safe, reliable and well executed engineering. Our Mumbai team works closely with colleagues in the United States and other regions, sharing one project delivery system, one ownership culture and one quality standard.

Why this role exists (from an engineering point of view)

The oil, gas and chemical sector is in the midst of a significant transformation. We are embracing digitalization and software driven ways of working to improve how we deliver. This role is not only about writing code. It is about reshaping how engineering teams execute design work. You will use technology to strengthen design delivery workflows, improve model and drawing production, reduce check and rework cycles, shorten deliverable cycle times, improve engineering data quality, and connect design tools and project delivery systems.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated software developer and solution engineer to join our technology team. In this role, you will design, develop and deploy software solutions that support our digital initiatives and improve engineering delivery. This role is primarily a product builder for engineering workflows. Corporate IT provides the hosting and security controls, and you will partner with Corporate IT and project teams to meet client requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Build and maintain a prioritized backlog of initiatives, workflow opportunities, bugs, enhancements, and platform work, in partnership with the Technology and Innovation Manager and Engineering Manager. Spend structured time with engineering disciplines to observe how design execution, models and drawings are produced, checked and revised, then translate pain points into clear requirements. Build small proofs of concept, test them with a handful of users, refine, then roll out widely with training and support. Design, develop, test and deploy software applications tailored to the needs of the Oil, Gas, and Chemical engineering division. Integrate new solutions with existing systems and data sources, with a focus on design tool integration and reliable handoffs across the project delivery cycle. Build Microsoft based workflow solutions for engineering teams, including approvals, dashboards, document routing and simple internal apps. Stay current with technologies relevant to engineering workflow improvement, including cloud services and, when appropriate, AI and machine learning, then apply them where they reduce rework and cycle time. Partner with Corporate IT to implement and monitor security measures that protect sensitive data and meet company and client security policies and applicable regulatory requirements, aligned with client requirements. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues promptly, coordinate with Corporate IT when the root cause sits in hosting, access or security controls. Maintain clear documentation for all developed solutions, including design notes, user guides, support steps and a simple change history.

Technical Skills

Programming & Web: Proficiency in Python, Java, C# or similar object-oriented languages; experience with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern front-end frameworks. Cloud Platforms: Hands-on experience with Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform. Databases: Strong knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB. Design Tools: Exposure to or strong interest in CAD, BIM, or plant design tools including AutoCAD, SmartPlant, Plant 3D, and Revit. Networking: Solid understanding of networking fundamentals and security concepts. Microsoft Platform: Experience with Power Platform, SharePoint, Teams, and Office 365 to support approvals, dashboards, document workflows, and simple engineering apps.

Soft Skills and Mindset :

This role calls for someone who is as interested in how engineers think as in how code runs. The ideal person moves easily between a discussion on access in a model review and a discussion on database structure in a design session.

We are looking for someone who:

Is curious about engineering problems and comfortable asking basic questions to understand the work before proposing a tool. Can explain technical concepts in clear language to non IT colleagues and listen carefully when engineers describe their needs. Is patient with legacy processes and data, yet motivated to chip away at them with practical changes. Can hold their own in a room full of senior engineers, receive direct feedback and adjust solutions without taking it personally. Collaborates well across offices and time zones, especially with teams in the United States who share ownership of projects. Keeps commitments, manages their own backlog transparently and communicates early when priorities or timelines need to shift.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related field.

Experience

Three to five years of experience in software development or solution engineering. Experience working in or alongside engineering, construction, energy, manufacturing or other technical project environments is preferred.

Preferred experience

Exposure to engineering workflows such as P&ID development, model review, drawing production, change management or field queries. Track record of developing and deploying internal tools that were adopted by non IT users in a corporate setting. Familiarity with industry specific software and tools used in Oil, Gas and Chemical engineering is a plus. Familiarity with AI and ML concepts and frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn is a plus.

Why Join Us

This role places you at the intersection of engineering and technology on real projects that affect safety, schedules and long term assets. You will work with colleagues across India and the United States, see how design decisions turn into built facilities and shape tools that help people do some of the most complex work in our industry.
