About the Role
We are seeking a Technical Manager - Automation, to provide strong technical leadership and system-level direction for developing advanced automation solutions in Epiroc's Underground portfolio.
This role is focused on heavy machinery automation - encompassing embedded control systems, real-time communication, and offboard supervisory platforms for mining and construction equipment.
You will act as a technical steward, driving design integrity, software-hardware integration, and cross-functional alignment across Underground Material Handling, Drilling, and brand-agnostic automation platforms.
You will play a pivotal role in shaping next-generation automation and control architectures - including Automotive CAN-based systems, C/C++ development, and Qt-based visualization - ensuring scalable, reliable, and safe operation of Epiroc's autonomous and semi-autonomous equipment.
This position requires deep hands-on technical expertise, system-level thinking, and collaboration across global R&D teams.
Mission of the Role
To define and drive the technical direction, architecture, and integration of automation and control systems that enable Epiroc's next generation of intelligent and sustainable mining & construction equipment.
This role focuses on developing robust, scalable, and interoperable system architectures across onboard and offboard automation domains - ensuring seamless interaction between embedded controllers, sensors, and operator platforms.
By combining deep system expertise, architectural stewardship, and cross-domain collaboration, the Technical Manager ensures that every automation solution is technically robust and future-ready while supporting new technology initiatives, prototypes, and proof-of-concepts to align with global divisional R&D teams, accelerate time-to-market, and drive business growth in line with Epiroc's sustainability and innovation goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership:
Define and guide the system, hardware, and software architecture for onboard (embedded) and offboard automation solutions.
Ensure scalability, interoperability, and reusability across control systems, platforms, and global projects.
System Integration:
Lead the integration of embedded controllers, sensors, HMIs, and supervisory systems, ensuring seamless system behavior and communication.
Oversee implementation using C/C++, Qt/QML, and Automotive CAN/J1939 frameworks, maintaining high standards of performance and safety.
Drive hardware-software co-design efforts, collaborating with electrical and mechanical engineers to ensure cohesive system performance and optimized interfaces.
Conduct design and code reviews to ensure compliance with architectural principles, functional safety standards (ISO 13849 / IEC 61508), and software best practices.
Innovation:
Support new technology initiatives, prototypes, and proof-of-concepts that strengthen future product capabilities.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance system reliability, maintainability, and efficiency.
Project Execution:
Oversee validation and testing of automation features through simulation, lab setups, and field trials, ensuring hardware-software reliability and performance.
Collaborate with global test and verification teams to ensure system readiness and compliance with safety and quality standards.
Technical Governance and Knowledge Sharing:
Establish and uphold design standards, coding guidelines, and version-control practices across projects.
Promote DevOps and CI/CD methodologies for efficient software delivery and integration.
Mentor engineers by sharing architectural and hardware integration insights, fostering a culture of learning, collaboration, and technical excellence.
Collaboration:
Work closely with global R&D centers to align architecture, feature roadmaps, and software / hardware standards.
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and testing teams to ensure system coherence and end-to-end performance validation.
Serve as a technical bridge between product management, controls, and software teams, ensuring consistent design intent.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Technical Expertise:
Proficiency in C and C++ (11/14/17) for embedded or real-time systems.
Strong experience with Automotive CAN / J1939 communication and diagnostics.
Hands-on experience in Qt/QML for HMI or visualization development.
System-level understanding of distributed architectures, controllers, sensors, and HMIs.
Familiarity with build systems (CMake), version control (Git), and CI/CD environments.
Architectural and System Integration Skills:
Demonstrated experience in defining and evolving systems or software architectures for complex embedded systems.
Proven ability to bridge hardware-software integration, ensuring interoperability across platforms and components.
Deep understanding of functional decomposition, interface design, and system behavior validation.
Collaboration and Technical Influence:
Strong ability to influence technical decisions and align cross-functional teams toward a common architecture or system goal.
Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills across multicultural, global teams.
Capable of mentoring engineers and guiding design discussions to maintain architectural consistency and technical excellence.
Domain Experience:
Prior experience in Mining, Construction, Off-highway, or Automotive industries preferred.
Exposure to Functional Safety standards (ISO 13849 / IEC 61508) is an advantage.
Education:
Bachelor's or master's degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering or a related field.
Nice to Have:
Experience with SCADA, remote control, tele-operation, or autonomous machinery used in heavy equipment or off-highway vehicles.
Knowledge of functional safety (ISO 13849 / IEC 61508) and cybersecurity concepts for embedded control systems.
Familiarity with simulation and testing tools (e.g., Gazebo, Unity, or MATLAB/Simulink-based environments) for validation of automation features.
Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) or software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing setups.
Exposure to system engineering processes (requirements management, system verification, and validation).'
Prior collaboration with global cross-functional R&D teams or international assignments.
Certification such as Certified Functional Safety Engineer (TUV SUD) is an advantage
