Job Description

What You'll Do:
The Tax and Compliance Specialist meaningfully contributes in Avalara's compliance operations by preparing and filing multi-jurisdictional tax returns. You will maintain relationships with both customers and U.S. tax jurisdictions, helping resolve notices and support change management activities. The Specialist also contributes to process improvements by partnering with our teams .You'll report to the Manager Compliance and is based in the Pune office. What Your Responsibilities Will Be:
You'll prepare and file multi-jurisdictional tax returns across various filing frequencies.
You'll manage pre-cycle and off-cycle activities including customer outreach, account updates, filing calendar adjustments, and special projects.
You must handle critical prepayment processes and troubleshoot issues to reduce risk.
You should resolve jurisdictional notices by coordinating with customers, jurisdictions, and internal teams.
You'll navigate jurisdiction websites and complete manual filing processes when needed.
Review statutory bulletins and support change management efforts.
Contribute to Statutory Readiness & Review projects by attending meetings and providing insight.
Maintain relationships with key jurisdiction contacts and Avalara's Government Relations team.
Perform QA on tax content and form changes; identify and support process and technology improvements.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Global Compliance, Product, Engineering, Content, Finance, and Sales.
Lead meetings, track action items, and communicate updates via email and wiki.
Attend legislative monitoring meetings and share key updates.
Represent Avalara in state partnerships and jurisdictional meetings.
Foster strong relationships with tax authorities to support Avalara's compliance goals.
Work U.S. business hours to align with team and client needs. What You'll Need to be Successful:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field
8+ years of relevant experience with a bachelor's degree.
At least 2+ years working during U.S. business hours in a customer-facing or government-facing capacity
Experience working in or with U.S. state tax departments, private tax firms, or corporate tax teams
Hands-on experience being Power of Attorney and resolving jurisdictional tax notices
Knowledge of U.S. state tax rules, audits, filing processes, and jurisdictional requirements
Ability to research tax law, analyze filings, and advocate for tax solutions
Familiarity with Avalara systems and concepts such as Nexus, exemptions, marketplace facilitator rules, and tax reporting
Understanding of transaction flow and its impact on tax calculation, return preparation, and filing.
