SYSTEMS ENGINEER: Usability and Workflow

As part of a SRC Team, your challenge will be to collaborate on the creation of an excellent user experience for a broad range of respiratory solutions. As a Systems Engineer focused on usability and workflow, you will be responsible to ensure Philips\xe2\x80\x99s software and hardware are safe and effective and designed for the intended user and meet international usability standards. You create usability evaluation plans, conduct and coordinate usability testing activities, apply best practices and heuristics to improve usability and accessibility, and ensure usability practices meet applicable quality and safety standards. You will also envision and articulate novel solutions to interaction design problems highlighted through usability testing, aligning, and enhancing the Philips design language guidance. You engage team members in creating a sustainable approach to usability within and across projects. You work within a human-centered-design approach from concept through market launch with marketing, medical office, and engineering teams. You work closely with designers and engineers to communicate findings and solve difficult usability challenges. You can collaborate as part of a product development team to enable product teams to follow human-centered-design and usability best practices throughout the product development process. Define applicable user groups and use environments and coordinate aggregation of study participants. Provide budget and resourcing estimates as appropriate.

We are looking for a Systems Engineer to lead the user experience track of our innovation program. You will be responsible for orchestrating and driving the design direction and user experience of our solution. You will work with an international and multidisciplinary team to understand the needs and experiences of users and other stakeholders, using that insight to establish clear direction for the user experience and positioning of this new solution.

You are responsible for:

  • Plan and organize user studies in co-operation with stakeholders such as product managers, project managers and end-users.
  • Set measurable usability goals and specifications to evaluate mock-ups, interaction designs and products with end-users (e.g. transcribing evaluation results, interpretation of test results and documentation of the test results).
  • Create, manage, execute usability evaluation plans to be performed across design and development of our products. Such activities are defined in cooperation with stakeholders in the BUs and executed according to current standards on usability engineering to ensure compliance with European and American regulation (i.e. FDA).
  • Conduct expert reviews, heuristics evaluations using established usability practices and methods. Report results, draw conclusions and make recommendations for re-design and usability requirements.
  • Conduct usability requirements analysis, domain/task analyses to elicit user needs.
  • Provide consultancy on human factors and provide consultancy on standards on usability as required by medical device regulations legislated by applicable governing bodies, such as US FDA, EU MDR, Health Canada, Australia TGA.
  • Lead design and development teams in applying user centered design and in properly addressing Human Factors.
  • Apply and define interface and interaction principles in conjunction with guidance from existing design language documentation.
  • Define and apply usability principles specific to the contexts of use.
  • You help create design standards and requirements for the on screen and hardware user interfaces of Philips Healthcare products.
  • Collaborate in modeling the user experience, especially applying human factors to the design solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews.
  • Iteratively evaluate design solutions.
  • Create information architectures and workflows.
  • Create functional designs for application screens (wireframes and prototypes).
  • Craft experiences, prototypes and demos that together create a definitive experience that is in alignment with the Philips brand and design language.
  • Use applicable skills (sketching, prototyping and specification) to define and communicate interaction concepts to marketing, engineering, and customers.
  • Create excellent UI standards based on the analysis of user needs and requirements and on your knowledge of human factors principles. The standards are created in collaboration with other design and businesses stakeholders.
  • Create mock-ups and interactive prototypes to evaluate the standards.
  • Identify opportunities and constraints inherent in technology and platform decisions and illuminate the impact of technology choices on user experience and product quality, including usability impacts.
To succeed in this role, you\xe2\x80\x99ll need a customer-first attitude and the following
  • Bachelors or master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Academic background in interaction design, product design or cognitive science with focus on Human-Computer Interaction and Usability
  • At least 5+ years progressive experience as a usability engineer
  • Proven knowledge of Human factors and interaction design principles
  • Experience with usability methodologies, processes and standards, prototyping tools for creating mock-ups
  • Knowledge and experience in applying user centered design and usability engineering, preferably to medical devices according to FDA regulation and standards (like IEC 62366-1):
  • Experience in conducting heuristic evaluations and usability evaluations, preferably of medical devices.
  • Understanding design of experiments, statistical analysis
  • Experience in the creation of products from requirements analysis and specifications to validation
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability of consulting and communicating results to design and development teams
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to perform with multidisciplinary teams
  • Leadership skills
  • Understanding of Quality System Regulations (QSR).
  • Understanding of Risk Management process
  • Understanding of Agile product development
  • Experience in the Healthcare space
  • Knowledge of both physical and cognitive ergonomics
  • A getting-things-done mentality
