System Architect - Mechanical Engineering for special purpose winding
machines owns the overall machine architecture, ensuring all mechanical,
electrical, control, and software elements work together to meet
functional, performance, safety, and cost targets. The role converts
requirements into clear system concepts, FRS/DRS documents, and
validated architectures, guiding cross-functional teams through design,
trials, and release.
Position overview
- Job Title: System Architect - Mechanical Engineering
- Department: Mechanical Design
- Reports to: Head - Mechanical Design
- Location: Bengaluru
This position provides technical leadership for end-to-end system
definition of winding SPMs, from requirements capture and architecture
to validation and handover to production and service.
Key responsibilities
Requirements, FRS and DRS
- Lead creation of Functional Requirement Specification (FRS) in
collaboration with cross?functional teams (sales, projects,
mechanical, electrical, controls, quality, service) for each winding
machine project.
- Elicit, structure, and document system requirements, including
inputs, outputs, controls, interfaces, performance, safety, and
regulatory needs.
- Translate FRS into detailed Design Requirement Specifications (DRS),
break the system into logical modules/subsystems, and define clear
responsibilities and interfaces for each.
Conceptual design and architecture
- Develop conceptual system architecture and layouts covering
mechanical, electrical, control, HMI, and data flows for special
purpose winding machines.
- Define inputs, outputs, controls, interfaces, and operating modes
ensuring process flow, safety, ergonomics, and maintainability are
addressed upfront.
- Identify critical technical risks in concepts, propose mitigation
strategies, and maintain architecture documents and interface
control descriptions.
Design reviews, verification and validation
- Plan and conduct structured concept and design reviews with
cross?functional teams at defined project milestones, driving
decisions and closing actions.
- Collaborate closely with Manager - Mechanical Design to verify
designs against FRS/DRS, support detail design teams, and approve
architecture-critical changes before release.
- Define and oversee trials, testing, and design validation plans (dry
runs, pilot runs, endurance tests, interface checks) to confirm that
system behavior meets specified requirements.
Modelling, simulation and system behaviour
- Use 3D CAD and multiphysics / kinematic simulation tools to evaluate
new concepts, optimize mechanisms, and improve existing winding
machine architectures.
- Build and maintain system architecture models (for example
MBSE/SysML or equivalent block diagrams) to analyze system behaviour
under user interactions and predefined test scenarios.
- Analyze test and field data to refine models, update requirements,
and drive continuous improvement of standard machine platforms.
Research, interfaces and system security
- Research emerging mechanical concepts, actuation technologies,
controls strategies, and safety practices relevant to winding and
special purpose machines, and recommend best?fit solutions.
- Identify and define critical mechanical, electrical, and software
interfaces, ensuring robustness, safety, and information security
across the machine and connected infrastructure.
- Ensure architecture complies with applicable machinery safety and
industry standards and supports future scalability and modularity.
Communication and team building
- Provide technical leadership to cross?functional project teams,
mentoring engineers and promoting systems thinking and disciplined
documentation.
- Facilitate effective communication between stakeholders (management,
design, projects, production, suppliers, and customers) to maintain
alignment on requirements, risks, and decisions.
- Contribute to building a high?performance systems engineering
culture through coaching, training, and knowledge-sharing sessions.
Qualifications and experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (preferred)
or related discipline.
- 10+ years of experience in mechanical design and systems
engineering, including significant exposure to special purpose
machines, automation, or complex electro?mechanical systems.
- Strong experience in requirements engineering (FRS/DRS), system
architecture definition, and cross?functional project leadership.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD and relevant simulation/analysis tools;
exposure to MBSE or system modelling methods is an advantage.
Key skills and competencies
- Deep understanding of mechanical systems, motion control, and
integration with electrical/PLC/HMI systems in industrial machinery.
- Strong analytical, problem?solving, and risk?management skills with
capability to simplify complex systems into clear modules and
interfaces.
- Excellent communication, documentation, facilitation, and
team-building skills to work with diverse internal and external
stakeholders.
