The Surface Coating Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all coated products meet required specifications, performance standards, and customer expectations. This role oversees coating processes such as painting, powder coating, plating, anodizing, or specialized industrial coatings, and implements quality control systems to maintain consistent coating quality and reliability.
2. Key Responsibilities. Quality Assurance & Control
Develop, implement, and maintain quality inspection plans for surface coating processes.
Inspect coated parts for thickness, adhesion, appearance, corrosion resistance, and surface defects.
Use measurement tools such as coating thickness gauges, gloss meters, adhesion testers, and salt spray test chambers.
Maintain calibration and verification of coating-related test equipment.
B. Process Monitoring & Improvement
Monitor coating process parameters (pre-treatment, curing, spray application, bath chemistry, etc.).
Collaborate with production to ensure optimal process settings and eliminate non-conformities.
Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) for coating defects.
Optimize coating line efficiency, reduce scrap, and improve first-pass yield.
C. Documentation & Compliance
Prepare and maintain quality-related documents: inspection reports, test records, control plans, work instructions, PPAP documentation, etc.
Ensure compliance with internal quality standards and external requirements (ISO 9001, IATF 16949, ISO 14001, customer specs).
Participate in audits (internal, customer, supplier) related to coating processes.
D. Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with R&D, production, maintenance, and supply chain teams to ensure coating quality and process consistency.
Support customer technical communication regarding coating issues and specifications.
Assist in training operators and inspectors on proper coating procedures and quality requirements.
E. Supplier Quality (Optional, if applicable)
Evaluate and qualify coating material suppliers (paint, powder, chemicals).
Review supplier CoA/CoC and manage incoming inspection for coating materials.
Work with suppliers on corrective actions and quality improvements.
3. Required Qualifications Education
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
Experience
1-3 years of experience in surface coating, painting, powder coating, plating, or similar processes.
Experience with quality assurance in manufacturing preferred
