A Structural Designer is responsible for planning, designing, and detailing structural components of buildings and infrastructure projects. The role ensures that structures are safe, stable, cost-effective, and compliant with design codes and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare structural designs and drawings for buildings, bridges, industrial structures, etc.
Analyze loads (dead load, live load, wind, seismic, etc.) and structural behavior.
Develop detailed drawings, layouts, and reinforcement detailing.
Coordinate with architects, civil engineers, MEP teams, and contractors.
Ensure designs comply with local and international building codes.
Review and revise designs based on site conditions and feedback.
Assist during construction for design clarifications and technical support.
Prepare reports, calculations, and technical documentation.
Important Skills for a Structural Designer
Technical Skills
Structural analysis and design knowledge (RCC, steel, prestressed structures)
Strong understanding of IS codes / ACI / Eurocodes (as applicable)
AutoCAD (mandatory)
Structural software: ETABS, STAAD Pro, SAFE, SAP2000
Basic to advanced knowledge of Revit Structure / BIM (preferred)
Load calculations and design optimization
Reading and interpreting architectural & structural drawings
Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills
Strong numerical and analytical thinking
Ability to identify design risks and provide solutions
Attention to detail and accuracy in calculations
Communication & Coordination

Educational Qualification (Typical)
B.E. / B.Tech in Civil Engineering
