  • Job Purpose
A staff nurse working in the Inpatient department (IPD) has to provide need based care to the patients in the department.
  • Principle Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assesses the patients and / or the significant others adaptation to the health / illness process.
  • Identifies, reports and documents changes in the health status which interfere with patients ability to meet basic needs.
  • Recognizes deviations from normal based or diagnostic data.
  • Establishes a nursing, diagnosis based on need and assessment data.
  • Identifies anxieties / fears and coping behavior's.
  • Integrates principles of growth and development in determining nursing needs.
  • Enters into the teaching / learning activities that are specific to the patient / significant others level of development, knowledge and learning readiness.
  • Supports and reinforces the teaching of other health professionals.
  • Participates in determining teaching effectiveness by observing desirable behavior changes; modifies teaching methods / activities appropriately.
  • Collects data related to overt, verbal and non-verbal communication of patients and significant others.
  • Communicates the plan for care to the health team members in oral and written forms.
  • Consults with more experienced registered nurses or other health care professionals
when problems are outside your scope of practice.
  • Uses the established lines of authority and communicates in the work setting.
  • Uses therapeutic communication skills when collecting data, during nursing intervention and evaluations of effectiveness.
  • Communicates reports and records assessment data, nursing care plans, interventions and evaluations accurately and promptly using the established communication systems.
  • Interprets hospital and nursing policies and procedures to patients, significant others, staff members and appropriates individual and or groups.
  • Identifies and attempts to remove barriers to effective communication.
  • Recognizes personal ineffective communication patterns and makes modifications in technique.
  • Assesses nursing care priorities.
  • Provides antenatal ,intra-natal , post natal care of patients
  • Monitoring and performing tests on newborns
  • Providing education and support to mothers and families after delivery
  • Assesses human and physical resources for care.
  • Identifies the significant difference in goals of the health team and the patient family and relates these to the appropriate person.
  • Determines the learning needs of the personnel under supervision.
  • Delegates to nursing personnel tasks / functions in accordance with their knowledge and demonstrated proficiency.
  • Provides leadership in the delivery of patient care.
  • Collaborates with nursing and other health care disciplines in the process of monitoring the quality of client care.
  • Assists in the collection of data within established formats.
  • Uses established findings of nursing studies and / or trends in nursing literature to promote quality of nursing practice.
  • Practices legally and ethically within the scope of own practice field.
  • Evaluates own performance against established criteria and sets goals for improvement
  • Assumes responsibility for own continues learning.
  • Recognizes and reports policies and procedures that may impede quality patient care.
  • Functions as a patient advocate within the nursing system.
  • Participates in professional activities.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of current issue and trends in nursing and health care.
  • Promotes a professional nursing image in the hospital and community.
  • Performs any duties / tasks that may from time to time be assigned by Sister in charge or immediate supervisor.
  • The occupation requires emotional stability to help patients and their families work through the treatment process and cope with death if treatment fails.
