The Staff Nurse (Labour Ward) is responsible for providing skilled nursing care to mothers during labour, delivery, and post-partum period. The role ensures safe maternal and neonatal outcomes by following evidence-based nursing practices, hospital policies, and patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Patient Care
Assist obstetricians and gynecologists during normal and high-risk deliveries.
Monitor maternal vital signs, labour progress, and fetal heart rate.
Administer prescribed medications, IV fluids, and injections.
Provide emotional support and reassurance to mothers and their families.
Manage pain relief methods as per protocols.
2. Labour & Delivery Assistance
Prepare and maintain the labour room with necessary sterile instruments and supplies.
Assist in normal vaginal deliveries, caesarean sections, and emergency procedures.
Ensure safe handling and resuscitation of newborns when required.
Maintain strict aseptic techniques during delivery.
3. Postnatal & Neonatal Care
Provide immediate care to the newborn (cord care, APGAR scoring, breastfeeding initiation).
Educate mothers on breastfeeding, hygiene, and newborn care.
Monitor postnatal mothers for complications (bleeding, infection, BP changes).
4. Documentation & Reporting
Maintain labour records, delivery notes, and partograph accurately.
Report any complications to the attending doctor immediately.
Ensure proper handover at shift change.
5. Infection Control & Safety
Adhere to hospital infection control protocols.
Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste.
Maintain cleanliness and sterility of labour room.
6. Teamwork & Coordination
Coordinate with doctors, anesthetists, and pediatricians for patient management.
Guide junior nurses and nursing assistants in labour room care.
Participate in patient education and counselling programs.
Qualifications & Requirements:
GNM / B.Sc Nursing (Registered with State Nursing Council).
Minimum
1-3 years
experience in Labour Ward / Maternity Hospital (freshers with training may be considered).
Sound knowledge of obstetric and neonatal care.
Good communication, empathy, and ability to handle emergencies.
Willingness to work in rotational shifts (day/night).
