The ICU Staff Nurse provides high-quality, specialized nursing care to critically ill patients. This role involves continuous monitoring, advanced clinical skills, and close collaboration with physicians and the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and effective patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities1. Patient Care & Monitoring
Provide direct nursing care to critically ill patients requiring intensive monitoring.
Assess, monitor, and document vital signs, neurological status, and hemodynamic parameters.
Manage ventilators, infusion pumps, and other life-support equipment.
Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and treatments as prescribed.
Recognize and respond to changes in patient condition promptly.
2. Clinical Procedures
Perform critical nursing procedures such as:
Arterial line care
Central line management
Wound care and dressing changes
Suctioning (oral, tracheal)
Catheterization
ECG monitoring
Assist in emergency procedures (CPR, code blue response, intubation setups, etc.).
3. Documentation & Reporting
Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, and progress in the EMR.
Maintain detailed ICU flow sheets and nursing notes.
Report critical findings promptly to physicians and team leaders.
Assist in handover reports during shift changes.
4. Communication & Coordination
Collaborate with ICU doctors, respiratory therapists, lab staff, and other healthcare professionals.
Provide emotional support and clear communication to patient families.
Educate families on treatment plans, patient care, and ICU protocols.
5. Safety & Quality Standards
Follow infection control, isolation protocols, and safety guidelines strictly.
Maintain a sterile environment during invasive procedures.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits.
Ensure safe disposal of medical waste and sharp items.
6. Patient & Equipment Management
Prepare and maintain ICU equipment and emergency crash carts.
Assist in patient transfers and ensure proper monitoring during transport.
Ensure timely ordering and availability of supplies.
QualificationsEducation & Certification
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc. Nursing) or General Nursing & Midwifery (GNM).
Registered Nurse license.
ICU or critical care certification (preferred).
Experience
1-3 years of nursing experience (ICU experience preferred or required depending on facility).
Strong knowledge of ICU protocols, critical care equipment, and emergency procedures.
Skills
Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking abilities
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Ability to work in high-pressure, fast-paced environments
Proficiency in EMR systems and documentation
