The Staff Nurse - ICU is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to critically ill patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. The nurse ensures continuous monitoring, timely intervention, and effective coordination with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to achieve optimal patient outcomes while maintaining all safety and infection control standards.
Key Responsibilities1. Patient Care
Provide round-the-clock nursing care to critically ill patients in the ICU.
Monitor and record vital signs (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation) and promptly report abnormalities to physicians.
Administer prescribed medications, intravenous fluids, and blood products accurately.
Assist in the management of ventilators, infusion pumps, and other critical care equipment.
Ensure correct positioning, hygiene, and comfort of patients.
Perform and assist with emergency procedures such as CPR, intubation, and code blue situations.
2. Monitoring and Documentation
Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient charts, reports, and nursing notes.
Record intake and output, lab reports, and clinical assessments.
Ensure timely documentation of all nursing interventions and physician instructions.
3. Equipment Handling
Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot ICU equipment (ventilators, cardiac monitors, syringe pumps, defibrillators, etc.).
Ensure proper maintenance, cleaning, and calibration of all medical devices.
Report malfunctioning equipment immediately to the biomedical department.
4. Infection Control and Safety
Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control protocols.
Maintain aseptic techniques during all procedures.
Dispose of biomedical waste as per hospital policy.
Follow patient safety and ICU emergency procedures.
5. Communication and Coordination
Coordinate with doctors, respiratory therapists, and other allied health professionals for patient care.
Communicate effectively with patient families regarding patient condition and care updates (as permitted).
Participate in patient handovers during shift changes.
6. Quality and Professional Development
Participate in nursing audits, quality improvement activities, and continuing education programs.
Keep updated with latest ICU nursing practices and guidelines.
Maintain professionalism, empathy, and confidentiality at all times.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
B.Sc. Nursing / GNM Diploma (Registered Nurse)
Experience:
Minimum 1-3 years of experience in ICU or critical care (freshers may be considered with ICU training).
License:
Valid Nursing Registration with the State Nursing Council.
