5. Job Purpose
A staff nurse working in the Intensive Care Unit has to provide need based care to the patients in the critical care department.

• Principle Duties & Responsibilities

• Provides nursing care to critically ill patients in the ICU.
• Keeps all ICU patients under close observation and administers prescribed medications and treatments.
• Provides assistance to the doctor or other medical personnel in the assessment of patients and delivery of treatments, such as dressing wounds, and monitors the life support equipment that patients use.
• Provides the patient's family with support as well as education.
• Carries out both physical assessments of patients upon admission to the hospital.
• Collaboration with fellow members of the critical care team.
• Acting as a liaison for patients and the families of patient.
• Respecting the rights and beliefs of patients.
• Maintain the prepared standard protocol of asepsis strictly.
• Prepare and check inventory of the drugs, crash cart properly.
• Check monitor, ventilator, all lifesaving gadgets for proper working condition
• Be able to draw blood from both a central and arterial line, as well as give medication.
• Responsible for assigning duties within the ICU and monitoring the care.(if necessary)
• Completes and documents initial assessment of the patient according to the health care facility's guidelines. Initiates and revises the patient's plan of care based on continuing assessments.
• Includes patient teaching and discharge planning in overall plan of care.
• Incorporates clinical and technical aspects of care with nursing actions and interventions in

7.1. Skills and Knowledge

• The staff working in the ICU must have sound knowledge and skills in critical care patients' assessment and monitoring of patients.
• She should possess good communication skill.
• She should be organized and understanding
• She should also have good management skills and motivate her team
