Position Overview
A Staff Nurse in a 100-bedded NABH-accredited hospital like Mayom Hospital in a Tier 1 city is the first level professional nurse in the hospital hierarchy. The role requires maintaining professional standards at all times and providing expert bedside care to patients while executing special technical duties in specialized areas like operation theatres, intensive care units, and other critical care areas.
Primary Responsibilities
Patient Care and Clinical Duties
Assessment and Planning
Assess the total needs of patients and prepare comprehensive nursing care plans
Continuously evaluate and update nursing care based on individual patient requirements
Direct Patient Care
Provide complete nursing care for assigned patients
Manage patient admission and discharge procedures
Assist patients with daily living activities including bathing, mouth care, nail care, and pressure point management
Administer medications and injections as prescribed
Monitor and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure) every four hours or as required
Conduct urine testing for sugar and albumin
Provide feeding assistance and distribute diets to patients
Manage bedpan and urinal care
Technical Nursing Procedures
Perform specialized procedures including enemas, catheterization, dressings, irrigations, and oxygen therapy
Assist with nasogastric intubation, gastric gavage and lavage
Collect, label, and dispatch laboratory specimens
Provide pre-operative and post-operative patient care
Escort patients to and from various departments for investigations
Assist medical staff during patient examinations and treatments
Ward Management Responsibilities
Shift Management
Hand over and take charge of patients and ward inventory during each shift
Maintain therapeutic environment in assigned wards
Give and receive detailed shift reports
Equipment and Supply Management
Routine care and cleaning of dressing trolleys, cupboards, apparatus, and mackintosh
Prepare surgical supplies, bandages, and splints
Maintain stock registers and inventories
Make indents for drugs, surgical supplies, and other stores
Keep custody of dangerous drugs and maintain administration records
Daily check of emergency drugs and life-saving equipment
Environmental Management
Keep wards clean and tidy
Manage care of clean and soiled linens
Ensure disinfection of linens, beds, floors, and bedpans
Maintain proper upkeep and repairs of linen and ward equipment
Professional and Educational Duties
Supervision and Training
Provide demonstration and guidance to student nurses and domestic staff
Supervise auxiliary staff including nursing orderlies, ward boys, ayas, and sweepers
Assist in orientation of new staff nurses
Coordinate work of other healthcare professionals like physiotherapists, social workers, and dietitians
Professional Development
Participate in staff education programs and meetings
Engage in professional activities and continuing education
Maintain good interpersonal relationships with all categories of staff, patients, and relatives
Specialized Area Duties
Operation Theatre
Prepare and lay out trolleys according to operation schedules
Assist surgeons and anesthetists during procedures
Monitor patient condition during and after operations
Count instruments and mops before wound closure
Act as operation theatre sister in her absence
Labor Room Management (if applicable)
Provide antenatal, intranatal, and postnatal care
Assess labor progress using partographs
Conduct normal deliveries and provide newborn care
Perform newborn resuscitation when needed
Key Performance Standards
Patient Safety and Quality Care
Ensure effective patient care delivery throughout the hospital
Follow prescribed protocols in case of patient accidents or deaths
Provide health education to patients and their attendants
Report any emergencies or unusual occurrences to nursing supervisors
Documentation and Communication
Maintain accurate patient records and documentation
Observe, record, and report all procedures and test results
Care for patients' personal effects in accordance with hospital policies
Additional Requirements
Professional Conduct
Maintain professional appearance and demeanor at all times
Be attentive and present at the nursing station during duty hours
Handle any additional duties assigned from time to time
NABH Compliance
Adhere to all NABH accreditation standards and quality protocols
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs
Ensure compliance with infection control and safety measures
