The Staff Nurse - Emergency Room (Casualty) is responsible for providing prompt, efficient, and compassionate nursing care to patients presenting with emergency and life-threatening conditions. The role involves rapid assessment, stabilization, continuous monitoring, and coordination with emergency physicians and multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes in accordance with hospital policies, clinical protocols, and statutory guidelines.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities
Receive, triage, and assess patients presenting to the Emergency Room based on the severity of illness or injury.
Provide immediate nursing interventions in emergency and trauma situations, including cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and poly-trauma cases.
Assist doctors during emergency procedures such as intubation, CPR, defibrillation, suturing, wound management, fracture stabilization, and emergency surgeries.
Monitor and record vital signs, neurological status, oxygen saturation, intake/output, and patient responses to treatment.
Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and injections as prescribed, ensuring adherence to the "Five Rights" of medication administration.
Perform emergency nursing procedures including cannulation, catheterization, wound dressing, splinting, nebulization, and suctioning.
Ensure proper infection control practices, universal precautions, and patient safety measures at all times.
Emergency & Critical Care Management
1.
Participate actively in Code Blue, trauma calls, mass casualty incidents, and disaster management protocols.
2.
Prepare and maintain readiness of emergency trolleys, crash carts, defibrillators, ventilators, monitors, and other emergency equipment.
3.
Identify early signs of patient deterioration and promptly escalate to the attending physician or ER In-charge.
4.
Ensure safe and efficient transfer of patients to ICUs, operation theatres, wards, or referral centers.
Documentation & Compliance
1.
Maintain accurate, timely, and complete nursing documentation including triage notes, nursing assessments, medication records, and incident reports.
2.
Ensure compliance with hospital policies, NABH/JCI standards (as applicable), statutory requirements, and ethical nursing practices.
3.
Report adverse events, medication errors, and near misses as per hospital protocols.
Coordination & Communication
1.
Coordinate with ER doctors, consultants, lab, radiology, blood bank, and other support services for timely diagnosis and treatment.
2.
Provide clear and empathetic communication to patients and relatives regarding care processes, while maintaining confidentiality.
3.
Assist in medico-legal cases (MLC) documentation and coordination with authorities as per legal requirements.
Administrative & Support Functions
1.
Ensure proper stock management of ER consumables, drugs, and equipment; raise indent requests when required.
2.
Maintain cleanliness, organization, and readiness of the ER area.
3.
Guide and support junior nurses, nursing students, and paramedical staff in emergency care practices.
Professional Development
1.
Participate in continuous nursing education, emergency drills, mock codes, and training programs.
2.
Stay updated with the latest emergency nursing protocols, ACLS/BLS guidelines, and hospital SOPs.
Skills & Competencies
