Job Description

Mechanical Design Engineer specializing in sheet metal is responsible for designing, developing, and analyzing components and systems made from thin metal sheets. They leverage computer-aided design (CAD) and engineering principles to create designs that are functional, manufacturable, and cost-effective. This role requires expertise in both the design process and the manufacturing methods specific to sheet metal fabrication. Responsibilities

Design and development

Create and revise detailed 2D drawings and 3D models of sheet metal parts and assemblies using CAD software like SolidWorks, Inventor, or Creo. Apply advanced knowledge of sheet metal manufacturing processes, such as bending, forming, and welding. Develop innovative design concepts for new products and improve existing ones, with a focus on manufacturability and cost efficiency. Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs), detailed engineering specifications, and other technical documentation. Design and provide input for tooling, fixtures, and jigs used in manufacturing and assembly.

Analysis and testing

Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure precision and compliance with standards. Conduct engineering validation and design reviews to ensure designs meet quality, durability, and performance standards. Utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and other simulation tools to validate the integrity of designs under various conditions. Assist in the creation of prototypes and participate in the testing and validation of new designs.

Collaboration and support

Partner with cross-functional teams, including production, quality assurance, and project management, to ensure effective communication and project delivery. Support manufacturing and assembly processes by troubleshooting issues and providing technical guidance. Work with suppliers and internal teams to establish specifications and documentation that control component and system quality. Provide support to junior engineers and production staff.
Requirements and skills

Education:

A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is typically required.

Experience:

3+ years of professional experience specifically in sheet metal design and manufacturing.

CAD proficiency:

Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD software, with experience in sheet metal modules.

Technical knowledge:

Strong understanding of manufacturing processes like metal stamping, forming, welding, and laser cutting. In-depth knowledge of engineering mechanics, material properties, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., ANSI, ISO).

Soft skills:
